Naples, FL – The SUNY Brockport softball team was swept in Tuesday's pair of games down south at the Gene Cusic Classic. Brockport fell to Emerson College, 6-2, and St. Elizabeth, 7-3.
Brockport 2, Emerson 6 – Game 1
Going 1-for-2 in the game, freshman
Danielle Wenzek registered the team's lone RBI in the 9am game, thanks to a sac fly in the fourth.
Kellie Gentile was 1-for-3 at the plate and came around to touch home plate for one run.
Riley Barrett,
Hannah Jacobs, and
Jackie DuTot all batted 1-for-3 against Emerson. Barrett added a stolen base to her stat line for the game.
Emma DeJesus scored a run for the Golden Eagles and drew a walk.
Victoria Angelo (L, 0-3) threw her first complete game of the season as the starting pitcher for Brockport. In 6.0 innings of action in the circle she struck out three batters and allowed just three earned runs.
The Emerson Lions struck first with a 2-run inning in the second. They matched that output in the third, taking a 4-0 lead into the fourth.
Brockport showed signs of life with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Gentile got things started with a single. DeJesus reached on an error that put Gentile on third, threatening to score.
A wild pitch brought Gentile in, as the team made it a 4-1 game. Moments later, freshman
Caitlyn Dailey laid down a sacrifice bunt that pushed DeJesus to third base. Wenzek then stepped up for the sac fly, RBI that scored the squad's second run.
Entering the fifth inning, the Golden Eagles trailed by just a pair of runs at 4-2. However, the Lions responded with two more runs in the last few frames in response. They went on to take the 6-2 win on Tuesday morning.
Brockport 3, St. Elizabeth 7 – Game 2
Jodie Burdick went a solid 2-for-3 at the dish in game two of the day, scoring one run and registering an RBI.
Olivia Hayden matched Burdick's 2-for-3 effort with one RBI of her own as well.
Caitlyn Dailey knocked in one RBI, batting 1-for-3 against the Eagles from St. Elizabeth.
Riley Barrett and
Victoria Angelo each scored a run, hitting 1-for-2 and 1-for-3 respectively. Barrett once again stole one base in the outing.
Fiona Gibiser (L, 2-3) started in the circle for the Golden Eagles in this one. Throwing for yet another complete game, she struck out one batter and allowed six earned runs.
In the bottom of the first, lead-off batter Barrett was hit by a pitch to land on first base. Soon after she successful stole second to sit in scoring position. Burdick brought her home with a hard-hit single, giving Brockport an early 1-0 lead.
St. Elizabeth would then go on to score seven unanswered runs, spanning from the second to the top of the sixth inning. The Eagles held a 7-1 lead over the Golden Eagles going into the bottom half of six.
Burdick and Angelo hit back-to-back singles to get runners on first and second. Soon the two would advance on the base paths, allowing Dailey's single to score Burdick. Up next was Hayden, who connected for another single that brought Angelo home to score.
The Green and Gold had cut into the lead, making it a 7-3 score with one two outs to work with and two runners on base. St. Elizabeth made a pitching change and immediately made a double-play to bring an abrupt ending to Brockport's comeback bid.
The Golden Eagles have two more games left on their slate at the Gene Cusic Classic in Naples, FL. They face Crown College at 11am and New York University at 1pm on Wednesday back at North Collier Park.
