Naples, FL – On the final day of Brockport's showing at the Gene Cusic Classic, the softball team split its pair of games on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles defeated Crown College, 6-4, before falling to New York University, 6-2.
Brockport 6, Crown 4 – Game 1
Olivia Hayden had a big game against Crown, batting 3-for-4 with a triple and two stolen bases. Hayden knocked in a pair of RBIs and came in to touch home plate twice.
Jenna Downey registered three RBIs in the game, going 1-for-2 with a double and a sac fly.
Emma DeJesus was 2-for-4, while lead-off hitter
Riley Barrett finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Danielle Wenzek,
Hailey Burdick, and
Amanda Blakely all recorded hits as well. Blakely also scored one run, while
Kellie Gentile was credited with a run and an RBI.
Starting in the circle for the Green and Gold was
Victoria Angelo. She pitched 3.0 innings with two strikeouts, allowing four earned runs.
Roseland Stroh (W, 1-1) got the winning decision after entering to pitch the final 4.0 innings. Stroh allowed no hits and no runs, while striking out four batters.
It was all Crown early on in the contest, as the team got on the board with one run in the first. It continued in the third, adding three more to the tally. Brockport trailed, 4-0, until the fifth inning came around.
In the top of the fifth, Hayden hit an RBI single that scored teammate
Erin Dougherty. Still in the fifth, with runners on second and third,
Jenna Downey hit a double to left center. Downey's shot scored both Hayden and Blakely, making it a 4-3 game.
Down one heading into their final at-bat, the Golden Eagles would rally with another 3-run inning in the seventh. An RBI triple from Hayden sparked the comeback, as the game was tied at 4-4.
Gentile put down a bunt that scored Hayden, giving the squad its first lead of the day at 5-4. Downey provided the insurance run with a sac fly to left field, bringing Gentile in to score. Scoring six runs in the final three innings, Brockport pulled out the 6-4 victory to start the day.
Brockport 2, NYU 6 – Game 2
In the second game of the set,
Emma DeJesus was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Caitlyn Dailey and
Olivia Hayden both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Jackie DuTot also had a hit in the outing, going 1-for-3.
Erin Dougherty's sac fly in the fifth inning registered the lone RBI for the Green and Gold.
Fiona Gibiser (L, 2-4) went the full 7.0 innings for Brockport once again. She allowed just one earned run to score and walked just one batter in the game.
NYU had the bats working early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The Golden Eagles were able to respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first. A throwing error by the NYU third baseman allowed
Olivia Hayden to score from first base.
The Violets added two more runs in the fourth inning, increasing their lead to 5-1. Looking to lessen the deficit, Dougherty hit a sac fly to right field, bringing Dailey in to score the team's second run.
Still down by three, Brockport went into the sixth inning looking for another late rally. However, NYU would score one more in the seventh and kept Brockport from getting home the rest of the game. The Violets held on for the 6-2 victory.
The Golden Eagles conclude the trip to Florida with a record of 3-9 overall after a busy week of games at North Collier Park. Up next on the schedule is their home opening double header, when Nazareth comes to Brockport on Wednesday, March 29
th at 3pm.
