New Paltz, NY – The SUNY Brockport Baseball program competed in a double header against SUNY New Paltz at Loren Campbell Memorial Field in New Paltz on Friday. The Golden Eagles won their first game of the day 4-3, and completed the day with a 14-4 win in game two.
Game One – James Houlahan led the game off with a triple in the top of the first but was not brought home.
Justin Pangburn singled to left field in the top of the second inning, but the game remained scoreless.
Brockport got the ball rolling in the top of the third with three runs scored.
Johnny Genau hit a single to center field followed by
Nicholas Pastore being hit by a pitch.
Patrick Bigham hit his second home run of the season to left field and brought both teammates in to score. Finishing the top of the third, Brockport was up 3-0 over the Hawks.
New Paltz scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth with a home run. The Hawks scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth making the score even at 3-3.
Brockport pulled out the final run needed to win the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out left,
Ryan Mansell doubled to right field. Pangburn singled to the short stop allowing Mansell to advance to third. Houlahan singled to left field bringing Mansell home for the final run of the 4-3 game.
Adam Douglass (W, 3-0) got the win on the mound after stepping in to pitch in the second inning. He threw for 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs.
Anthony Lapine (S, 1) also went 4.0 innings on the way to five strikeouts and the save.
Game Two – The second game was more fast paced with a 14-4 final score. Brockport scored three runs in the first. Pastore doubled to left field, which moved Genau to third after being walked.
Zach Eldred doubled to left field bringing both Pastore and Genau home. Bigham was hit by a pitch, advancing to first and Mansell was walked. Pangburn was walked, in turn moving everyone around the bases, and bringing Eldred home to score.
New Paltz scored one run in the bottom of the first to get on the board. However, Brockport responded by scoring four runs in the top of the second.
Houlahan started the inning with a single to center field. Genau followed suit with another single to move Houlahan to second. Pastore singled to third base, bringing Houlahan home and advancing Genau to third. Pastore stole second and Eldred walked. Bigham advanced on a fielder's choice and Genau scored on an error by the catcher. Tiejen singled to right field bringing home Pastore. Pangburn hit a sacrifice fly, bringing home Eldred for the Golden Eagles seventh run of the game.
There were no more runs until the top of the third when the Golden Eagles struck again. Pastore hit a double to center field, and Eldred reached first on an error by pitcher. Pastore advanced to third and then Eldred stole second. Bigham continued to bring players home with a single that scored both Pastore and Eldred.
New Paltz scored twice in the bottom of the third making the score 9-3 after three innings of play.
Brockport scored twice more in the top of the fifth. Pastore hit a double to right field. Eldred hit a home run, bringing Pastore and himself over home plate. The Green and Gold was now up comfortably at 11-3.
In the sixth inning Brockport scored twice more. Pangburn was walked and stole second. Houalhan was walked and Pangburn stole third. Genau singled to center field bringing home Pangburn. Houalhan scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch. New Paltz scored its final run of the day in the bottom of the sixth.
Brockport scored its final run in the top of the eighth. Genau was hit by a pitch and advanced to second as Pastore grounded out to third base. Eldred was walked and
Ryan Voight was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded, Mansell was walked bringing home Genau for the final run of the 14-4 game.
Throwing 6.0 innings,
Matt McGowan (W, 3-1) got the win for Brockport on the mound. He struck out five batters and only gave up three earned runs.
Nick Ianniello closed out the final 2.0 innings with three strikeouts without giving up a hit or any runs.
The Golden Eagles have now won six in a row, improving to 10-6 overall. They begin conference play at 2-0 after Friday's doubleheader. They are back on the diamond Saturday morning at 9am to complete the weekend series against New Paltz.
