Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team's season came to an end after an exciting finish at home against New Paltz. Falling to the Hawks, 8-7, in overtime, the Golden Eagles will conclude the year 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC.
After forcing a turnover, Brockport trailed by one with just 15 seconds left in regulation. Going the length of the field in the allotted time,
Nate Askin ended up tying the game up at 7-7 with just three seconds remaining.
Askin's goal sent the match into overtime, where New Paltz was able to net the game-winner. The Hawks finish the regular season 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference, clinching a postseason spot for the first time in program history.
The first quarter was all New Paltz, as the visiting team scored four goals to start the game.
Ben Hay got Brockport on the board, making it a 3-goal gap going into the second. The script got flipped in the second as the Golden Eagles scored a trio of unanswered goals. They were able to tie the game up at 4-4 going into halftime.
With neither team being able to find the back of the net in the third, the score remained tied at 4-4 heading into the fourth.
Mike O'Brien scored a man-up goal early in the quarter to break the tie and give Brockport its first lead of the game. However, the Hawks were able to respond in a big way.
New Paltz scored three consecutive goals to surge forward with a 7-5 advantage with less than five minutes to play in regulation.
Jack Peterson beat the opposing goalie with 2:11 left on the clock to cut the deficit to just one. Then in the final moments of regulation,
Nate Askin tied the game up at 7-7 to push the match into overtime.
The Hawks scored just 46 seconds into the overtime period, snagging the win on the road in the regular season finale.
Ryan McCarthy and
Jhovanny Olivares both finished with three points from one goal and two assists.
Nate Askin led the team with two goals on the day.
Ben Hay,
Jack Peterson, and
Mike O'Brien all found the back of the net once.
Senior defenders
Anthony McGee (4),
Chris Bock (2), and
Alex Jacobs (2) combined for eight caused turnovers in the game on Senior Day.
Cameron Kuzniar made seven saves in net, playing the full 60 minutes.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles have been eliminated from postseason contention. They conclude the season 2-5 in the conference and 4-10 overall in Head Coach
Colin Cornaire's first year at the helm.
