SUNY Brockport Director of Athletics Erick Hart has announced the hiring of Marty Vajen as the Golden Eagles assistant track & field/cross country coach on Tuesday. Vajen will report to Head Track & Field Coach
Ed Jaskulski and his duties will include overseeing the sprints group for the track & field team while also assisting
John Davis with the cross country program.
"We're excited to welcome Marty to our Brockport Athletics family as a full-time assistant track & field and cross country coach. Marty's passion, expertise, and commitment to the sport are evident, and we believe he will play a pivotal role in advancing our athletic programs," said Hart. "Marty will be a welcomed addition to the coaching staff and alongside Coach Jaskulski and Coach Davis, we aim to reach new heights and inspire our student-athletes to reach their full potential."
Vajen recently completed a five-year stint as an assistant coach of the track & field and cross country programs at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. He was named the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Region Indoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year with the Presidents. He also earned W&J Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
During his time at W&J he coached two outdoor national qualifiers, four All Mid-Atlantic Region athletes, 14 individual PAC Champions, 34 All-Conference athletes and one cross country All-American. He also helped the President's win the 2023 PAC Indoor Team title as well as the 2018 PAC men's cross country team championship.
"I would like to thank Erick Hart, Steve Pike, Kathryn Stiner and the XC/T&F Coaching staff for this Golden (Eagle) opportunity," said Vajen. "I'm grateful for the chance to continue supporting student-athletes through their college careers and hope to build on the previous team successes."
Prior to W&J, he was a graduate assistant with the Muskingum University Cross Country and Track & Field teams for two years in New Concord, Ohio. During his time at Muskingum, he created personalized training plans for jumpers and hurdlers while also leading advisory meetings and tracking academic progress for 50+ student-athletes.
Other duties at Brockport will include on-track instruction for practices and meets, student-athlete and team development, academic monitoring, meeting strategies, recruitment and retention of qualified student-athletes, meet management, budget management and team travel.
Before becoming a coach, Vajen was a standout on the Muskingum track team. With success on the track and in the classroom, the Lancaster, Ohio, native was named to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Team.
While at Muskingum, Marty earned a master's degree in Adult Education in May of 2018 and a bachelor's degree in Biology in May of 2016. He currently resides in the Brockport area.
