Volleyball Continues Empire 8 Play This Weekend

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's volleyball team gets back to work with a pair of Empire 8 matchups this weekend. First the squad heads to Keuka College on Friday night for a 6pm start. The Golden Eagles will then return home on Saturday for a 1pm date with Elmira College.

Start of E8 Play: Last weekend marked the beginning of a new era as Brockport began conference play as a member of the Empire 8. At home, the Green and Gold opened the E8 schedule with a 3-1 win over St. John Fisher. After dropping the first set, 25-13, the Golden Eagles came back to win the next three sets 25-21, 25-21, and 25-18. The next day they fell to Nazareth on the road, 3-1. This time it was Brockport taking the first set, 25-15, before losing the next three (25-19, 25-16, and 25-23). Brockport is now 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8.

Offensive Leaders: Offensively the Golden Eagles have been looking to feed both Alexis Sison on the outside and Alenna Williamson in the middle. Sison (460 TA) is leading the team with 151 kills (3.08 per set) and 167.5 total points (3.42 per set). Williamson (335 TA) is second in both categories with 128 kills (2.42 per set) and 149.5 total points (2.82 per set).

Setting the table for the attacking players has been Kaitlyn Jewett and Lauryn Forand at setter. Jewett has totaled 289 assists so far for a tally of 5.35 assists per set. Forand has been solid in her first year with 187 assists (4.56 per set). The setting duo also are among the team leaders in service aces. Jewett leads Brockport with 25 aces, Gianna Felipe has 17 aces, and Forand has 15.

Defensive Leaders: Brockport has gotten heavy contributions from Elsie Logan on the defensive side of the action. She leads the team with 254 digs as the libero, and is averaging 4.7 digs per set for the Green and Gold. Alexis Sison (137), Gianna Felipe (128), and Kaitlyn Jewett (104) all have over 100 digs as well.

Three Golden Eagles have made 30 or more blocks battling above the net. Lauren Emke leads the way with 36 total blocks (6 solo), followed by Maddy Howell's 35 (5 solo), and Alenna Williamson's 30 (7 solo). Howell's 0.83 blocks per set is tops on the team.

Protecting the Nest: Saturday's match welcoming the Soaring Eagles from Elmira will be Brockport's second home match of the season. Last weekend the squad defeated Fisher, 3-1, in the home opener. With a 1-0 record at home in 2024 and an 8-0 home mark in 2023, Head Coach Jim Clar has yet to lose at home playing in The Vlog since taking over the program.

Looking at Keuka: Brockport will face the Keuka College Wolves on the road to start the weekend set. The Wolves enter Friday night at 5-10 overall and 1-2 in E8 play so far this season. They are looking to get back in the win column after back-to-back losses against Houghton (3-2) and Alfred (3-1). Keuka and Brockport last faced each other in 2017, with Brockport earning a 3-0 sweep.

Scouting Elmira: The Soaring Eagles have had a rough go of it so far this season, currently 2-15 overall and 0-3 in the Empire 8. Elmira has lost nine straight going into the weekend. The team last picked up a win back on September 14th, 3-0, against Marywood. Last week to start conference play, the Soaring Eagles fell to Keuka (3-0), Alfred (3-0), and Houghton (3-1). The last meeting between Brockport and Elmira saw a 3-0 sweep in favor of the Golden Eagles back in 2018.

Coming Up: Brockport will play a familiar foe on Wednesday, October 16th when the squad travels to play Geneseo. It will mark the first meeting between the two programs as members of the Empire 8. Match is scheduled for a 6pm start out in Geneseo, NY.
