Victor, NY – At the Pinnacle Athletic Campus, the SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team opened the new season with a loss to St. John Fisher, 21-9. Brockport starts the year 0-1, while the Cardinals open the campaign 1-0.
In his first game with the Golden Eagles,
Nick Askin made an immediate impact offensively with four goals. Freshman
Marc Zappula dished out four assists on the day for a team-high in his collegiate debut.
Brockport also had goals scored by
Jackson Worden,
Michael Marincic,
Logan Postel, and
Andrew DiPalma.
Alex Cash was credited with an assist in the game.
Contributing in other areas of the game, DiPalma led the team with six ground balls and went 13-for-29 on the faceoff.
Jack Acker,
Aidan Long, and
Jackson Worden all caused two turnovers defensively. Acker played the full 60 minutes in net, making 14 saves.
St. John Fisher won the first quarter, 4-2, taking an early lead with a pair of quick scores to open the contest. Postel closed the first with a goal to keep it close going into the second. The Cardinals turned it up a notch with six goals in the second quarter, which created a 10-4 lead at halftime.
Looking to get back into the game in the third, the Green and Gold scored four goals for the best frame of the day. However, St. John Fisher answered with four goals of its own to remain up, 14-8, going into the fourth.
The Cardinals put the game away in the final quarter, pulling away from Brockport with seven goals in the final quarter. The one score for the Golden Eagles wasn't enough to spark a comeback, as the squad fell in the season opener.
Comparing the two teams on the stat sheet, both fared well on the clear with Brockport going 22-for-30 and Fisher going 25-for-29. St. John Fisher had a slight edge in the turnover column with four fewer giveaways, and the team won the ground ball battle, 35-30.
The Golden Eagles look to right the ship in its upcoming home opener against Clarkson University. The first home game of the season is scheduled for a 4pm start on Wednesday, February 28
th.
