Baseball Sweeps Bridgewater in Saturday's Doubleheader

Myrtle Beach, SC – The SUNY Brockport baseball team finished off its trip down south this weekend with a pair of wins over Bridgewater State on Saturday. The Golden Eagles took game one of the doubleheader, 6-5, before sweeping the day with a 9-3 win in game two.

Brockport improves to 3-2 overall on the young season, now on a 3-game win streak following the visit to Myrtle Beach.

Game 1

Matthew Coon went 3-for-3 at the plate to start the doubleheader with a double and three RBIs. He knocked in the first run of the game in the first inning, but Bridgewater answered in a big way.

Bridgewater State went on to score five unanswered runs from the second through the fourth inning, going up 5-1. The Golden Eagles trailed until they put together a game-winning rally in the sixth.

Jason Mansell got it rolling with a solo homer, highlighting his 2-for-4 effort at the plate in the game. Brian Tietjen drew a walk with the bases loaded soon after, getting credit for an RBI to make it a 5-3 score.

Zach Eldred then hit a sac-fly to left field which brought Quinn Mahoney in to score. Closing out the inning, Coon came up big again. He rattled off a 2-RBI double, which gave Brockport a 6-5 lead heading into the final inning.

Ryan Peters (W, 1-0) closed out the game on the mound for the Golden Eagles to secure the win. He threw the final 2.0 innings, striking out four batters without allowing single hit or run.

Justin DelVecchio started on the bump for Brockport. He went 3.0 innings on the way to three strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Eric Servellon threw 2.0 innings as the middle reliever, allowing two hits and no runs to score.

Game 2

The second game of the doubleheader started off differently, with neither team getting a run to score in the first three innings. Anthony Lapine started on the mound and went 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit before Colin Pytlak took over in the third.

Pytlak (W, 1-1) went 3.0 innings and allowed just one earned run during his shift. Striking out six batters on the day, Colin eclipsed the 100-career strikeout mark to become the 16th player in program history to do so.

In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles got on the board to take the game's first lead. TJ Strevell knocked a 2-run homer, as he went 2-for-4 in the game with three RBIs. The game would stay at a 2-0 Brockport lead until the sixth.

Josh Indek hit an RBI single, helping finish his game 1-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored. Later in the sixth, Zach Eldred hit a grand slam to add four more runs to Brockport's total. The team's 5-run inning in the sixth made it a 7-0 lead.

Bridgewater answered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to cut into the lead. However, that would be the only offense the squad would produce in game two. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the seventh to put the cherry on top.

Strevell connected for a triple to score one run for the Green and Gold. Logan Wing was able to send Strevell home soon after with an RBI single. Wing went 1-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored. The two runs in the seventh led to the final score of 9-3.

The Golden Eagles are scheduled for a trip to RIT on Tuesday, March 5th for a 3pm start in Rochester, NY for their next outing.
