Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport softball team lost a pair of conference games on the road against the Cortland Red Dragons. With final scores of 14-4 and 9-7, Brockport drops to 6-16 overall and 0-4 in the SUNYAC.
Game 1: Brockport 4, Cortland 14
Paige Wentland (1-2) knocked in two RBIs with one run scored in the first game of the doubleheader.
Olivia Simone (2-3) and
Riley Barrett (1-3) both connected for a double. Barrett added one run and one RBI.
Natalie Faas (1-2) hit a triple to right field for one RBI.
Kendall Phillips (L, 4-4) got the start in game one at pitcher. Phillips had three strikeouts, allowed four earned runs, and gave up eight hits. She went 2.2 innings before being relieved by
Fiona Gibiser in the third. Gibiser threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing another four earned runs on four hits.
Cortland got things going in the bottom of the first, scoring the first two of 14 unanswered runs through the fourth. Five different Red Dragons had at least two RBIs in the contest.
The Golden Eagles tried to battle back in the top of the fifth with a 4-run inning. After a pair of free bases taken, Barrett hit an RBI double to score Cece Rapplyea from second to end the shutout.
With two outs on the board, Wentland hit a single to right to score two runs for the Green and Gold. She was brought home by Faas after her triple for the fourth and final run Brockport scored in game one.
Game 2: Brockport 7, Cortland 9
Three different Golden Eagle batters registered multiple hits in a closer game two.
Olivia Simone was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Caitlyn Dailey rattled off three hits in her four at-bats, hitting one double and tallying one RBI.
Aubrey Ennis also hit a double in her 2-for-4 showing.
Brockport also got a double from
Erin Dougherty (1-2) at the plate.
Riley Barrett (1-4),
Tori Angelo, and
Kellie Gentile (1-1) all were credited with one RBI.
Jackie DuTot scored a run to go with a 1-for-4 batting effort.
Hadley Alguire (L, 2-4) went 2.0 innings as the starting pitcher and threw to three batters in the third before being pulled. She allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits.
Kendall Phillips came in to pitch the remaining 4.0 innings. Phillips allowed two earned runs on six hits during her shift.
An RBI single by Ennis brought Simone in to score early on, giving Brockport a 1-0 lead in the first. Cortland responded with a 6-run inning in the bottom half of the first, going up 6-1. The hosting Red Dragons would hold an 8-1 advantage going into the top of the fifth.
The Golden Eagles got hot and battled back late with six runs in the final three innings. Dailey brought a run in with an RBI single in the fifth to bring Simone home. The squad had a 4-run rally in the sixth to close the gap.
It was Gentile's single to left that scored Ennis for the first score of the inning. Simone would add to the momentum with another RBI single for the Green and Gold, scoring Dougherty. Barrett pulled DuTot home to score and Gentile scored on a wild pitch.
Cortland added its ninth and final run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to go up 9-6. Angelo hit a sacrifice fly to center in the seventh to score
Ciara Olivo to create the final of 8-7.
Coming up the Golden Eagles have a pair of road doubleheaders following a big home opening set. They take on Oswego State for a 3pm start on Tuesday and then go to Hilbert on Thursday for another 3pm open.
On Saturday the team will host Geneseo for a 12pm start to the doubleheader for the first home action of the season. It is Dumaw Day, as the program will celebrate and honor retired Head Coach John Dumaw.
