Brockport, NY – On Tuesday the SUNY Brockport softball team hosted Fredonia for a doubleheader, splitting the conference clash 1-1 on the day. Brockport took game one, 1-0, and then lost game two, 14-5. The Golden Eagles are now 8-18 overall and 2-6 in the SUNYAC.
Game 1: Brockport 1, Fredonia 0
The first game of the set was a pitchers duel, with just one run being scored in the 8-inning battle. Brockport's
Kendall Phillips (W, 5-5) pitched a complete game shutout after going the full 8.0 innings. She allowed no runs on four hits, while registering six strikeouts.
Brockport had seven hits in the contest, as two players had multiple hits in this one.
Olivia Simone went 2-for-4 with a run and a double, while
Emma DeJesus was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Riley Barrett (1-3),
Kellie Gentile (1-4), and
Reagan Myers (1-2) all connected for hits as well in the game. Barrett also stole one base, while
Danielle Wenzek and
Emma DeJesus each had sacrifices to move runners over.
With the game still tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Simone led off the inning with a double to left. Wenzek laid down the bunt as the pinch hitter, pushing Simone over to third.
With two outs and a runner on third base,
Emma DeJesus put an end to the contest. She rattled off an RBI single to right field, scoring Simone for the walk-off victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Brockport 5, Fredonia 14
The second game of the day had a different tone, with both teams getting on the board early. While Brockport held a 2-1 lead after the first, Fredonia went on to score 10 more runs over the next two innings.
Kellie Gentile was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, scoring two runs and connecting for a double.
Caitlyn Dailey also hit one double to go 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Emma DeJesus (1-3),
Olivia Simone (1-2), and
Grace Talbut all recorded one RBI in the game.
Hadley Alguire (L, 3-5) received the loss as the starting pitcher in game two. She went 1.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits.
Rose Stroh went 0.1 innings , allowing two runs to score.
Fiona Gibiser pitched the final 3.2 innings left to play. Gibiser had three strikeouts and no runs allowed.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Simone and DeJesus both knocked RBI singles to make it a 2-1 lead for Brockport. Fredonia scored six runs in the second and four more in the third to go up big, 11-2.
The Green and Gold responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, closing the gap. Fredonia took an 11-5 lead into the fifth inning before adding a few more runs. The Blue Devils had three runs in the fifth, putting the game out of reach for the 14-5 final.
The Golden Eagles are back on the road this weekend for SUNYAC doubleheaders against Potsdam on Friday at 3pm and at Plattsburgh on Saturday at 12pm.
