Rochester, NY – The SUNY Brockport softball team split the non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday against RIT. The Golden Eagles took game one of the set by a score of 2-0, before falling in game two 10-9. They are now 6-14 overall following the 1-1 showing against the Tigers.
Game 1: Brockport 2, RIT 0
Kendall Phillips (W, 4-3) went the full 7.0 innings for the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career. As the starting pitcher she allowed just three hits and struck out 11 batters in the victory.
At the plate,
Natalie Faas led the way with her 3-for-3 outing. She connected for a triple, scored one run, and had an RBI.
Caitlyn Dailey had the other RBI, going 1-for-4.
Tori Angelo made good as a pinch hitter getting a hit in her one at bat.
In the third inning, it was Dailey's hit that put Brockport on the board first. She hit one to right field that scored Faas for a 1-0 lead. Faas knocked in the second run of the contest in the fifth, bringing
Riley Barrett in to score with a triple to right.
Brockport was clean in the field in game one, allowing just three hits and committing no errors in the win. The squad snagged its sixth win of the season, already surpassing last year's win total.
Game 2: Brockport 9, RIT 10
The Golden Eagles got strong performances at the plate by a pair of players in game two.
Paige Wentland went 2-for-3 with a triple and five RBIs.
Olivia Simone was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and one RBI.
Other key contributions offensively came from
Emma DeJesus and
Natalie Faas, as each went 1-for-2. DeJesus scored twice and also drew a pair of walks. Faas had one RBI and one run.
Grace Talbut found home plate twice and
Kellie Gentile also scored a run.
Pitching was
Hadley Alguire to start, as she went 3.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs.
Fiona Gibiser also got to work with 3.0 innings of action, striking out five on the way to four earned runs.
Rose Stroh (L, 0-4) received the losing decision, allowing one run to score on one hit after 0.1 innings.
Game two saw both offenses really get going midway through the contest. It was a 2-1 lead for RIT heading into the fourth inning. Wentland hit an RBI single in the top of four to score two runs, giving Brockport a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, RIT got right back into it with three runs to take a 5-3 advantage. The Green and Gold responded with two runs in the fifth to tie the game up at 5-5, going into the bottom of five. The Tigers then regained a 2-run lead, 7-5, heading into the sixth.
An RBI from
Reagan Myers scored Wentland in the sixth, cutting the score to 7-6 going into the final inning. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Wentland cleared the bases with a triple to score three runs. Brockport took a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of seven.
RIT came up clutch in the final moments of the game at plate. With one runner on, the Tigers hit a 2-run homer to tie the score once again at 9-9. A single to right field would score the game-winning run for RIT, creating the 10-9 final.
The Golden Eagles will look to bounce back this weekend as they get back to conference play. They head to Cortland on Friday for a 3pm start to the doubleheader and Oswego on Saturday for a 12pm start.
