Oswego, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team moved to 1-1 on the young season, dropping a competitive road contest to Oswego State, 92-81, at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Despite a resilient second-half push that erased an early deficit, the Golden Eagles could not overcome the Lakers' efficient scoring night.
The Green and Gold placed four players in double figures, maintaining the balanced attack established in their season-opening win over Ithaca.
- Jacob Oka continued his dominant interior presence, leading all Brockport scorers with 21 points on efficient 9-of-16 shooting from the field. Oka completed the effort with seven rebounds (four offensive) and two assists.
- Senior Zachary Rice, coming off a game-high 21 points in the opener, delivered 17 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and added two steals.
- Transfer Camron Dyer maintained his high-impact role, scoring 14 points, including three crucial three-pointers, to go along with five rebounds.
- Sophomore Emilio Nabli came off the bench to step up in an increased role, delivering 10 points and shooting 50% (2-for-4) from three-point range. Nabli also provided solid defensive contributions, recording a steal and a block.
Freshman
Pharell Aybar contributed 7 points while being instrumental in running the offense, dishing out a team-high 6 assists. He also made his presence felt on the defensive end, tallying 3 steals on the night.
The game started as a high-energy, back-and-forth contest. However, the Lakers gained traction late in the first half, pulling ahead to hold a seven-point advantage, 38-31, heading into the break.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with renewed urgency, initiating a fierce comeback immediately. Within the first two minutes, back-to-back baskets from
Jacob Oka cut the Lakers' seven-point halftime lead all the way down to just one point (38-37) by the 18:25 mark. The game remained a tight contest, with Brockport answering every Laker bucket. The intensity peaked during a two-minute stretch where both teams traded shots in a combined 19-point scoring flurry that was capped by a
Pharell Aybar jumper, leaving the margin tight at 56-55 with just over ten minutes to play.
Despite Brockport's resilience and offensive surge, the Lakers managed to string together a run that stretched their lead back to seven points. Oswego then sealed the game late with a succession of deep shots from beyond the arc, holding off the Green and Gold's final comeback attempt. Brockport finished the game with an advantage in turnover margin, forcing 22 Oswego turnovers while only committing 16 of their own, and tallied nine total steals. However, a slight rebounding advantage (42-38) for Oswego and their higher shooting efficiency (51.8%) ultimately made the difference against Brockport's 46.4%.
