Men's Basketball Narrowly Defeats Nazareth to Celebrate Coach Dunne Night

Brockport, NY - On Friday night, the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team defeated Nazareth, 86-85, in a tightly contested E8 battle at home. The Golden Eagles have now won six in a row, improving to 13-8 overall and 11-1 in conference play.

Prior to the start of the game, Brockport took time to honor retired legendary Men's Basketball Coach Greg Dunne. This tribute set the stage for an exciting matchup between Brockport, where Dunne coached for years, and Nazareth, Dunne's alma mater.

Mekhi Beckett led SUNY Brockport with 21 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 4-for-7 from three-point range, while also making 7 out of 8 free throws. 

Jakhi Lucas contributed significantly with 15 points, 5 assists, and 5 field goals on 11 attempts. 

Jacob Oka added 16 points, connecting on 6 of 12 field goals and recording 2 steals. 

Zachary Rice was notable for his 8 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, while going 3-for-5 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.

In the first half of the game, SUNY Brockport established an early lead against the Golden Flyers, with Nathaniel Gordon kicking off the scoring with a three-pointer. Jacob Oka contributed significantly, scoring multiple layups and free throws, helping Brockport maintain their advantage throughout the half. Christian Amica provided a boost in the closing moments with two consecutive three-pointers, ensuring Brockport ended the half ahead 42-40.

In the second half, SUNY Brockport played a tightly contested game against the Golden Flyers, with the score remaining close throughout. Key performances included Mekhi Beckett's vital free throws and a three-pointer that helped the team regain the lead at 75-72. Zachary Rice contributed significantly with a defensive rebound and a crucial three-pointer, bringing the score to 69-68. 

Jakhi Lucas was instrumental in the final minutes, scoring a pair of free throws to extend the team's lead to 83-80, before Beckett's consistent free throw performance helped secure the game's conclusion with an 86-85 advantage.

The Golden Eagles are back on their home floor on Saturday for Senior Day. They will host St. John Fisher for a 4pm start.
