Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Goes 1-1 on Saturday to Start the New Season

Kissimmee, FL – The SUNY Brockport softball team split the pair of games on opening day, starting the 2025 season off 1-1. Brockport lost to Loras College, 9-1, before bouncing back with an 11-7 win over New England College.

Brockport 1, Loras 9 – Game 1 Final

The Golden Eagles began the new year against the Loras Duhawks Saturday morning for the season opener. Loras scored runs in all but the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule for a 9-1 win in the sixth.

Making her collegiate debut, freshman pitcher Colleen Davis (L, 0-1) got the start in the circle for game one. In her first NCAA softball outing she threw 3.0 innings with three strikeouts in a losing effort. Hadley Alguire finished out the final 2.2 innings for the squad at pitcher.

Grace Talbut had a strong start to the season with a 2-for-2 showing at the dish against Loras. She rattled of an RBI double in the second inning to score Aubry Ennis and prevent a shutout.

Saturday's slate began with a loss, but following the morning game the Golden Eagles had time to reset for the afternoon matchup with New England College.

Brockport 11, New England – Game 2 Final

The Pilgrims got first at-bat in the afternoon, as they took an early 1-0 lead. However, the top of the first would be the last time New England had an advantage on the scoreboard.

Brockport's offense came out hot with four runs in the first, three runs in the second, and two more runs in the third. This surge at the plate set the squad up with a 9-2 lead going into the fourth inning.

Olivia Simone knocked in two RBIs during Brockport's explosion of runs. She finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Grace Talbut added a pair of RBIs to her tally for the day, going 1-for-3 against NEC.

Freshman Teresa Cotty let the Brockport fans know who she is with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate against the Pilgrims. She did it all with a double, two runs scored, one RBI, and a stolen base. Kellie Gentile was effective in the leadoff role, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Reagan Myers, Paige Wentland, and Erin Dougherty also brought runs in to score for the Golden Eagles early on. Myers knocked Riley Barrett home to score in the first, Wentland hit an RBI single in the second, and Dougherty ushered Jackie DuTot and Natalie Faas home in the third.

The Pilgrims began to close the gap later in the contest, cutting Brockport's lead to 9-7 going into the bottom of the sixth. Reagan Myers put a stop to the comeback bid in the bottom of six. The sophomore launched her first career home run over the outfield wall, scoring a pair of runs to put the game away, 11-7.

Fiona Gibiser started in the circle at pitcher for Brockport in this one. She totaled 3.1 innings pitched and had one strikeout before Laina Beer stepped in as the reliever. Beer (W, 1-0) earned the decision victory, pitching 3.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts to her name.

For the first time since 2019, Brockport softball splits (1-1) on opening day down in Florida at The Spring Games. The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sunday for two more contests. They take on Farmingdale State at 10am and St. Lawrence at 12:15pm.
