Brockport, NY- The Brockport baseball team opened conference play with a dominant doubleheader sweep of Keuka on Friday, March 21
st. The Golden Eagles moved to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in Empire 8 play following Friday's doubleheader.
Game One: Brockport 9 – Keuka 3 (7 innings)
Anthony Lapine (W, 4-0) provided a quality outing for Brrockport, posting a career nine strikeouts with just three runs allowed across 5.2 innings of work.
Two big innings would fuel the Brockport offense, scoring five runs in the top of the second.
Matthew Coon cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left field before
Frank Vanzillotta would provide a two-run single to put Brockport up 5-0.
Up 5-1 entering the fifth inning, the Golden Eagles would tag on four more runs.
Zach Eldred would drive home a run with an RBI single before a wild pitch and a
Jason Story two-run double would Brockport up 9-1.
Keuka would add a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-2, but
Thomas Browne would toss 1.1 hitless innings to lock up the win for Brockport.
Jason Story provided an excellent outing in game one, reaching base safely four times (3-3, BB) with three RBIs and terrific defense in right field.
Game Two: Brockport 16 – Keuka 3
Angelo Agro (W, 3-0) set the stone with a solid outing, going six innings with five strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.
Jason Story would build off a strong game one, ripping an RBI single to put Brockport up 1-0 early. Keuka would respond quickly with the tying run at the bottom of the first.
The fourth inning would all but seal the contest for Brockport, plating nine runs in the inning. Frank Vanzillota,
Jason Story (2RBI),
Kyle Blake, and
Chris Martin (2RBI) would all provide RBI singles in the inning.
Matt Mayer would highlight the inning with a two-run home run, putting Brockport up 10-1.
The fifth inning saw another outburst from the Brockport offense, with
Zach Eldred clearing the right field wall for a two-run homer, increasing Brockport's lead to 12-1. Mayer and
Ryan Leniec would each add RBI hits in the inning to put Brockport ahead 15-1.
Camden Schaffer closed the contest for Brockport, collecting three punchouts in the seventh inning.
Matt Mayer led all Golden Eagles with four RBIs, with
Frank Vanzillotta and
Jason Story recording three hits each.
