Buffalo, NY – On Thursday the SUNY Brockport softball team was swept by Buffalo State on the road, playing at D'Youville University's Dobson Field in Buffalo. The Bengals took game one by a score of 6-4 and followed up in game two with a 5-3 score to end the doubleheader. The Golden Eagles move to 6-6 overall, with conference play beginning this weekend.
Brockport 4, Buffalo State 6 – Game 1 Final
It was the Green and Gold who struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. With runners on base,
Erin Dougherty (1-3) connected for an RBI single to score
Aubrey Ennis (2-3).
Caitlyn Dailey then brought home
Paige Wentland (1-3) for the second run.
After the Bengals got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, Brockport added to its early lead in the third. In her return to the lineup,
Kellie Gentile (1-3) rattled off an RBI triple that score
Natalie Faas who also made her return after missing some games.
Olivia Simone (1-3) then hit a double to send Gentile home for a run.
Brockport held a 4-1 lead going into the fifth inning, where Buffalo State took over. The Bengals rallied in the bottom of five with five runs to surge out ahead on the scoreboard, 6-4. Neither team would get any more runners around to score, resulting in the 2-run victory for Buffalo State to start the doubleheader.
Laina Beer (L, 2-1) started on the rubber for the Golden Eagles in game one, going 3.2 innings before
Fiona Gibiser took her spot in relief. Gibiser finished out the final 2.1 innings, without allowing any hits or runs to score during her shift.
Brockport 3, Buffalo State 5 – Game 2 Final
Game two of the doubleheader saw
Hadley Alguire (L, 1-2) take to the circle as the starting pitcher for Brockport. She went the distance, pitching 6.0 innings with just one walk, as she allowed four earned runs in a losing effort.
Again, it was Brockport that lit up the scoreboard first.
Aubrey Ennis (3-3) hit an RBI single that allowed
Kellie Gentile (1-2, 2 runs) to touch home plate for a 1-0 lead. However, the Bengals responded to take a 2-1 lead going into the third.
Looking for a response of their own, the Golden Eagles scored two big runs in the top of the third inning to go up 3-2 on the scoreboard. Gentile tripled to right field, her second triple of the day, to bring
Natalie Faas in to score. Then
Olivia Simone drove Gentile home to score run number three for the squad.
Buffalo State was able to tie the game up in the bottom half of the fourth inning, making it a 3-3 game. The Bengals then kept Brockport off the scoreboard for the final few innings, as their bats drove in a pair of runs in the sixth to snag the win, 5-3.
The Golden Eagles now turn their attention towards conference play, with their Empire 8 debut scheduled for Saturday. Originally meant to be at home, Brockport is now set to travel to Elmira for a 1pm start to the E8 doubleheader this weekend.
