Softball Falls at Elmira in Game 1, Game 2 Suspended Due to Weather

Box Score Elmira, NY – On Saturday the SUNY Brockport softball team made its Empire 8 debut with a doubleheader out in Elmira. The Golden Eagles lost game one, 12-4, before game two was suspended in the third inning due to the weather.

Brockport is now 6-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference with no makeup date/time announced yet to complete game two of the set. Elmira held on to a 5-2 lead in the third before play was halted.

Brockport 4, Elmira 12 – Game 1 Final

The Golden Eagles earned an early 2-1 lead in the first inning with the top of the lineup starting the day strong. After getting hit by a pitch to leadoff, Kellie Gentile (1-2, 2 runs) stole second to get in scoring position. Olivia Simone (1-3) hit an RBI double for the team's first run. Soon after, it was Teresa Cotty's (2-4) single that scored Simone for run number two.

Elmira was able to tie the game at 2-2, but Brockport responded with two more runs in the third to assume a 4-2 lead. Gentile drew a walk and stole second once again to get the inning started. Some fielding errors helped Gentile and Aubrey Ennis (1-4, 1 RBI) come around to score.

Colleen Davis (L, 2-3) got the start and kept the Soaring Eagles to just two runs through five. However, they exploded offensively late with seven runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Hadley Alguire and Fiona Gibiser each threw 1.0 inning in relief to close the game.

Brockport 2, Elmira 5 – Game 2  (Suspended in Top of 3rd Inning, 1 out)

The Golden Eagles came out in the first inning of game two and score a quick run to go up 1-0. An error allowed Gentile to get to first, which of course resulted in her immediately stealing second base for her third swipe of the doubleheader. Didn't take long for Gentile to score the game's first run, with Reagan Myers getting credit for the RBI.

Laina Beer got the start and came out with her best stuff early on. She struck out four batters in the first two innings, allowing no hits through her first six batters faced. The Brockport bats added another run in the second.

Cece Rapplyea got on base right away with a single to lead off the inning. After stealing second base, she quickly moved around to score. Paige Wentland single to right field, but the Soaring Eagle's error on the play allowed Rappleyea to touch home for a 2-0 Golden Eagle lead.

Elmira responded in a big way in the third with five runs before the game was called due to the weather conditions. With one out, an RBI double and a 2-run home run got it started. Fiona Gibiser stepped to the circle in relief of Beer and the Soaring Eagles. Two more runs came in to score and then the decision was made to suspend play.

No decision has been officially announced yet about when play will resume.

The Golden Eagles schedule has them traveling to Alfred University on Friday, April 4th for another E8 doubleheader. Game one is set for a 3pm start.
