Brockport Comes Up Short Against SUNY Poly at Home

BROCKPORT, NY – On Saturday, the Golden Eagles lost a pair of 1-run games to the SUNY Poly Wildcats. Game one was a 1-0 win for SUNY Poly, followed by a 10-9 win to complete the sweep. Brockport moves to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in Empire 8 play.
 
 
SUNY Poly edged out Brockport  with a seventh-inning run to secure a 1-0 victory in Empire 8 conference play on Saturday to open up the doubleheader.
 
Colleen Davis pitched a complete game, recording 7 innings with 4 strikeouts and conceding only one earned run. Davis faced 30 batters, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks, while maintaining a WHIP of 1.43. The pitcher successfully induced 10 groundouts and 6 flyouts, throwing 114 pitches with 72 strikes. Despite the effort, Davis noted a loss, bringing the season record to 4-6.
 
Aubrey Ennis led the Green and Gold at the plate, recording two hits with a double. Natalie Faas also made an impact with a double on her 1-3 outing at the dish. Olivia Simone and Teresa Cotty both went 1-3 with singles for Brockport.
 
In the circle, Davis pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run over seven innings while striking out four batters. Erin  Dougherty contributed several key plays at shortstop in the field earning five assists.
 
Brockport and SUNY Poly engaged in a tight contest, with the Green and Gold showcasing strong defense early in the game. In the first inning, both teams were retired in order, resulting in a scoreless start.
 
By the fourth inning, Brockport had recorded two hits, with Simone and Ennis each contributing singles. However neither were able to get around to touch home.
 
During the sixth inning, Cotty singled and Ennis followed with a double, pushing Jackie DuTot, the pinch runner, to third base. Despite this effort, the team was unable to bring home any runs, maintaining the 0–0 tie.
 
The seventh inning saw SUNY Poly break the deadlock. Kelly Powell doubled and later scored on a ground out by Shelbi Hagues, giving SUNY Poly a 1–0 lead.
 
Brockport's attempt to respond included a double from Faas, but they could not drive in a run. SUNY Poly narrowly escaped to take the win in game one, 1-0.
 
Following the break between games, the second-leg of the doubleheader was a completely different game than the first. After just one run was scored combined in game one, 19 runs were scored in game two.
 
Olivia Simone went 3-5 in the leadoff spot with a double and two runs scored. Aubrey Ennis was 2-2 with two walks, three runs scored, a double, and one RBI. Paige Wentland had a big outing, going 3-4 with two RBIs.
 
Both Kellie Gentile (1-4) and Caitlyn Dailey (1-3, 2B) registered two RBIs with one run scored. Riley Barrett scored one run in a 2-4 performance. Teresa Cotty had one RBI and scored one run, going 1-3 at the plate.
 
Fiona Gibiser got the start at pitcher, but Brockport also threw Hadley Alguire, Laina Beer, and Colleen Davis in game two. Davis ended up with the losing decision after going the final 3.2 innings.
 
It was all Brockport early, as the home team jumped out to a 7-1 lead through two innings. Then SUNY Poly changed the game with eight runs combined in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The score was tied at 9-9 going into the sixth, where the Wildcats scored what became the game-winning run.
 
Brockport is back at home on Sunday for another E8 doubleheader. The team will host Utica for a 1pm start to the set.
