Brockport, NY – On Monday, April 14
th the SUNY Brockport softball team hosted Elmira College to resume play from a suspended E8 matchup started on March 29
th.
The teams began play at the Clark V. Whited Complex in the top of the third inning, with one out, the bases loaded, and Elmira at the plate with a 5-2 lead.
To recap the portion of the game prior to the stoppage of play, The Golden Eagles came out in the first inning of game two and score a quick run to go up 1-0. n error allowed Gentile to get to first, which of course resulted in her immediately stealing second base for her third swipe of the doubleheader. Didn't take long for Gentile to score the game's first run, with
Reagan Myers getting credit for the RBI.
Laina Beer got the start and came out with her best stuff early on. She struck out four batters in the first two innings, allowing no hits through her first six batters faced. The Brockport bats added another run in the second.
Cece Rapplyea got on base right away with a single to lead off the inning. After stealing second base, she quickly moved around to score.
Paige Wentland single to right field, but the Soaring Eagle's error on the play allowed Rappleyea to touch home for a 2-0 Golden Eagle lead.
Elmira responded in a big way in the third with five runs before the game was called due to the weather conditions. With one out, an RBI double and a 2-run home run got it started.
Fiona Gibiser stepped to the circle in relief of Beer and the Soaring Eagles. Two more runs came in to score and then the decision was made to stop play.
Monday's part of the game saw the Elmira Soaring Eagles score two more runs in the top of the third inning. They would take a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of three where Brockport went to the plate looking to answer.
After Elmira kept Brockport off the board in the third, neither team would score another run until the fifth. In the top of five, the Soaring Eagles put one more run across to go up 8-3. They would go on to score five more in the sixth to take a 13-2 lead.
Needing four runs to extend the game, Brockport came up one short with three in the bottom of the sixth.
Aubrey Ennis helped bring in a pair of runs with the bases loaded to make the board read 13-4.
Caitlyn Dailey then hit an infield single to score
Jackie DuTot from third. However, the rally would end there and Elmira took the win in six innings, 13-5.
Ennis finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.
Paige Wentland was 2-for-3 and Cailty Dailey did the same with one run batted in.
Olivia Simone went 1-for-4 and
Cece Rappleyea was 1-for-3, as both scored one run. For a second day in a row,
Scout Preston went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter for the Green and Gold.
Laina Beer (L, 3-2) ends up with the losing decision after the start. She went 2.1 innings, allowed three hits, five earned runs, and had four strikeouts.
Fiona Gibiser stepped in as the reliever to throw for 2.2 innings with two hits, and three runs (two earned).
Colleen Davis pitched the final 1.0 innings. She allowed three hits, five runs (three earned), with two walks, and one strikeout.
The Golden Eagles are now 10-14 overall and 2-8 in the Empire 8 following the conclusion of the set against Elmira. They now get ready for a mid-week doubleheader at home against RIT for a step outside of conference play.
