Softball Sweeps Hilbert in Style With No-Hitter in Game 1

Brockport, NY – On Monday, the Golden Eagle softball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins in a doubleheader against Hilbert at home. They defeated the Hawks 9-0 in game one, before completing the sweep with an 10-2 win in game two. Brockport improved to 8-9 overall on the season.

The first game saw some history made, as freshman pitcher Colleen Davis threw a no-hitter against the Hawks. Davis throws the first Brockport no-hitter since Jamie Berger did so against Oneonta back on April 23rd, 2016.

Game two provided a pair of highlights as well, with two players getting their first career home runs wearing the Green and Gold. In the second inning, freshman Teresca Cotty launched a 2-run shot. Grace Talbut did the same in the fourth, another 2-run homer for the Golden Eagles in the game.

Brockport 9, Hilbert 0 – Game 1 Final

Colleen Davis (W, 3-5) got the start in game one and retired 10 straight batters to start what became her first career no-hitter. Going the full 5.0 innings in the circle, Davis allowed no hits, no runs, had four strikeouts, and just two walks.

At the plate, Olivia Simone really shined with a 3-for-4 effort in game one. She rattled off a pair of doubles and was credited with three runs batted in. Caitlyn Dailey also had three RBIs in the win, going 1-for-2 with a double.

Brockport also got contributions at the plate from Kellie Gentile (1-3, 1 RBI), Paige Wentland (1-2, 1 RBI), Aubrey Ennis (1-3), Teresa Cotty (1-2, 2B), and Riley Barrett (1-2).

To go with nine hits for the game, the Golden Eagles also has seven stolen bases. Erin Dougherty swiped a pair of bags, while Kellie Gentile, Aubrey Ennis, Paige Wentland, Riley Barrett, and Jackie DuTot each stole once.

After a scoreless first inning, Brockport got on the board in the first. Dailey laid down a solid sacrifice bunt to bring Dougherty in for the first run of the game. Simone added the team's second run in the third, scoring Gentile on an RBI double.

The Golden Eagles blew the game open in the fourth with three runs to take a 5-0 lead. They earned runs from Dailey's RBI double, a throwing error from Hilbert, and a sacrifice fly from Gentile.

Brockport finished the game off in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs to invoke the mercy rule. Wentland hit an RBI single to start off the scoring. That was followed by another RBI from Dailey to make the score read 7-0. Simone put the final nails in the coffin with her second double of the game, scoring two runs to end the game at 9-0.

Brockport 10, Hilbert 2 – Game 2 Final

Fiona Gibiser (W, 2-0) started at pitcher in this one, picking up the winning decision for Brockport. She threw 3.0 innings, with seven hits, two earned runs, and just one walk. Laina Beer finished out the final 2.0 innings in the circle, giving up no hits, no runs, and no walks with one strikeout.

After scoring nine runs on nine hits in the first game, Brockport's bats came back with 10 runs on 10 hits in game two. Aubrey Ennis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and two runs scored. Teresa Cotty's homer highlighted a 2-for-3 outing with two RBIs. Grace Talbut went big in game two at 2-for-2 with a 2-run homer and a double.

Olivia Simone (1-3) hit a triple and scored a pair of runs, Paige Wentland (1-1) came around to score, and Reagan Myers (1-1) brought a run in to go with her own triple. On the base paths, Brockport got stolen bases from Simone, Gentile, and Dailey in game two.

The second game of the Monday doubleheader started off differently, with the visiting Hawks getting on the board early in the top of the first. Trailing 1-0, Brockport responded in its first at-bat with three runs to go up 3-1. Ennis connected for an RBI single, followed by a bases loaded walk for Dailey and a sacrifice fly from Myers.

Hilbert would find another run in the second to cut into the Brockport lead. However, 3-2 would be the closest the Hawks would get after their at-bat in the second. The Golden Eagles went on to score seven unanswered runs in the next few innings to surge forward for the 10-2 win in five innings.

In the bottom of two, Teresa Cotty went yard to score two for Brockport. Cotty's first career home run at the collegiate level put the team up 5-2 going into the third.

In the fourth inning, the Green and Gold put the game away. Ennis hit an RBI single to make it a 6-2 lead to get things going. Up next came Grace Talbut's 2-run homer, with her first career home run at Brockport making it an 8-2 lead. Moments later DuTot brought a runner in to score and some laxed defense from Hilbert allowed another run to score on the play.

The Golden Eagles took the 10-2 win to complete the non-conference sweep over Hilbert on the day. They improved to 8-9 overall, still holding onto a 0-3 mark in E8 play.

Brockport gets back to league play on Wednesday, as the team heads to Keuka College for a 3pm start to the Empire 8 doubleheader.
