Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Open 2026 with Dominant 85-64 Victory Over La Roche

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team (4-5) kicked off the 2026 calendar year with a statement performance on Saturday afternoon, powering past La Roche University 85-64 at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium. In a game defined by suffocating defense and clinical transition offense, the Golden Eagles remained perfect at "The Vlog" this season, moving to 2-0 on their home floor.

Defensive Dominance: From the opening tip, Brockport's defensive unit was relentless, keeping the Redhawks out of rhythm and forcing them into contested looks. The Golden Eagles' activity in the passing lanes was a primary catalyst, as the team racked up a staggering 17 steals. Brockport was elite at turning defense into instant offense, converting 22 Redhawk turnovers into 25 points off turnovers.

After the first three minutes of play, the Green and Gold seized the lead and never looked back, refusing to let their foot off the gas. The defensive pressure translated to a massive shooting discrepancy; Brockport finished the afternoon shooting a hot 50.8% (33-65) from the floor, while holding La Roche to a frigid 31.3% field goal percentage and just 20% from beyond the arc.

Brockport set the tone early with a blistering first half, shooting 53.13% (17-32) to build a 45-33 cushion heading into the intermission. They maintained their efficiency in the second frame, shooting 48.48% to extend their advantage to as many as 26 points late in the contest.

Total Team Effort: The Golden Eagles featured a balanced scoring effort with four players reaching double figures.
  • Jacob Oka was a force on both ends of the floor, leading the team in scoring while providing a massive defensive presence. He complimented his 14 points with five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
  • Pharell Aybar displayed elite efficiency, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor. He was perfect from long range, knocking down both of his attempts from deep to finish with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
  • Providing vital production off the bench, Ajani Flemming was clinical in the mid-range, burying two early pull-up jumpers to ignite the offense. His biggest moment came with 9:41 remaining in the first half, when he converted a "and-one" three-pointer to push Brockport's lead to double digits for the first time of the game.
  • Christian Amica served as a disruptive two-way catalyst for the Green and Gold. He finished with 11 points and was a nuisance in the passing lanes, recording three steals and two assists to go along with two rebounds.
  • Omar White and Marco Evans were instrumental in sustaining the team's defensive identity, providing constant ball pressure that harassed the La Roche guards all afternoon. The duo combined for five of the team's 17 steals, with Evans swiping three and White adding two.
  • Freshman Bryce Marshall made the most of his minutes, showcasing his ability to finish around the rim with touch. Marshall turned in a season-high eight points on an efficient 4-of-5 in the paint, while also cleaning up the glass with three rebounds.
Up Next: With the non-conference portion of the schedule winding down, the Golden Eagles will look to carry that home-court momentum into league play. Brockport officially opens Empire 8 conference action this Tuesday, January 6th, as they host Elmira College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
