BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team (5-6, 1-1) faced a challenging night at home on Friday, January 9th, falling 77-63 to St. John Fisher University (6-5, 2-0)
The Golden Eagles established their largest lead of the night, a 5-0 advantage, within the opening minute following a layup by
Camron Dyer and a three-pointer from
Omar White. However, Brockport did not see a lead for the remainder of the contest after St. John Fisher tied the game at 5-5 with 17:59 remaining in the first half. While the game featured two ties and one lead change early on, the Cardinals maintained control for the final 37 minutes of play.
Gritty Second-Half Effort
Brockport showed resilience early in the second half, cutting the deficit to just three points at 47-44 following a
Jacob Oka free throw with 16:15 remaining. The Golden Eagles continued to trade blows, trailing only 53-44 with 12:43 left on the clock. However, the Cardinals began to pull away midway through the period, orchestrating a decisive run that pushed the lead to 15 points by the 7:59 mark. St. John Fisher eventually maintained their double-digit cushion for the rest of the way, a gap the Golden Eagles couldn't bridge despite a relentless effort to draw contact late in the game.
A major factor in the outcome was the battle on the boards, as the Cardinals' physicality allowed them to rack up 22 second-chance points compared to just five for the Golden Eagles. After a respectable 46.15% shooting performance in the first half, Brockport's offense cooled to a frigid 20% in the second half, which included a difficult 0-for-10 stretch from beyond the arc. Despite the half-court struggles, Brockport did find significant success in the open floor, outscoring Fisher 18-3 in fast-break points. The Golden Eagles also struggled at the charity stripe, finishing the night at 57.1% on 35 attempts.
Top Performers
Pharell Aybar was aggressive throughout the night, constantly getting to his spots and making the defense uncomfortable, finishing with a team-high 16 points. He did much of his damage at the line, going 8-of-14 from the charity stripe, and added two rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
In his second career start for the Green and Gold,
Jack Clancy was just shy of a triple-double, playing a team-high 33 minutes and recording 10 points and nine rebounds. He remained a defensive anchor all night, adding a steal and a block to his versatile stat line.
Jacob Oka and
Camron Dyer provided a physical presence in the frontcourt for Brockport. Oka contributed nine points and six rebounds while recording two steals on the defensive end, while Dyer added seven points, five rebounds, and a block to the effort.
