UTICA, N.Y. — The Brockport field hockey team suffered a hard-fought 3-2 road loss to Utica University on Saturday afternoon at Gaetano Stadium. With the conference setback, the Golden Eagles move to 10-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in Empire 8 play.
Utica gained early momentum in the opening period, striking twice in the first ten minutes. Adele Crayton put the Pioneers on the board at 6:40, followed by a goal from Jocelyn Spiezio at 8:34 to build a 2-0 cushion. Brockport cut into the deficit late in the second quarter when
Alexis Penree buried an unassisted strike at 28:26—her sixth goal of the season—sending the Green and Gold into halftime trailing 2-1.
The Pioneers reclaimed a two-goal advantage late in the third period as Mia Benincasa found the back of the cage at 44:59. Brockport continued to battle in the final frame, pressing forward on offense and creating chances off late penalty corners. At the 51:42 mark,
Terralyn McLaughlin converted a setup from
Sophia Jones to pull the Golden Eagles back within one at 3-2, but Utica held on in the closing minutes to secure the home victory.
Penree and McLaughlin accounted for the Brockport scoring, while Jones credited the lone assist on McLaughlin's tally. In the cage, freshman goalkeeper
Julia Nieboer delivered a solid defensive effort under heavy pressure, recording 13 saves across 60 minutes of action.
