Field Hockey Erases Early Deficit to Edge St. John Fisher 2-1

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Brockport field hockey team defended home turf on Wednesday night, securing a historic  2-1 victory over St. John Fisher University at Dr. Linda Arena & Class of 69 Field. The victory marks the Golden Eagles' first win over the Cardinals since 2012, as well as Head Coach Krista Archambeau's first career victory against the Cardinals. With Wednesday's win, Brockport extends its conference win streak to three straight games and improves to 9-2 overall (3-1 E8) on the season.

St. John Fisher struck first in the closing seconds of the opening period when Maggie Gocella converted a pass from Mary Kate McPhee at the 14:51 mark to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Brockport responded in the second quarter to ignite the comeback, leveling the score at 1-1 as Alexis Penree got the offense started by burying a feed from Kaitlyn Malinowski. Just minutes later, Penelope Schalck delivered an unassisted strike at the 26:59 mark to push the Green and Gold ahead 2-1 heading into halftime.

Both defenses locked down in a scoreless second half to preserve the lead. Freshman goalkeeper Julia Nieboer entered in relief in the second quarter and held the Cardinals scoreless, turning away four shots over 37-plus minutes of action to lock down the victory alongside starter Lauren Mastromarco (three saves). Sophia Jones, Carleigh Colvin, Emily Nestor, and Terralyn McLaughlin were instrumental to Brockport's defensive success in the second half.

Penree and Schalck led the attack with a goal apiece, while Malinowski provided the crucial assist on Penree's equalizer.

Up Next: The Golden Eagles will remain home for more Empire 8 conference action when they host Keuka College on Wednesday, October 14th at 4 p.m.
