Men's Basketball Takes Down Geneseo in Final Second of Regular Season Finale

GENESEO, NY - The Brockport Men's Basketball team (14-11, 10-6 E8) closed out their regular season in spectacular fashion on Tuesday night, securing a regular-season sweep over SUNY Geneseo with a 65-64 road victory. With the win, the Golden Eagles extended their current win streak to seven games as they head into the postseason with maximum momentum. Brockport officially enters the Empire 8 Postseason Tournament as the No. 5 seed.

Game Breakdown

The matchup lived up to the rivalry's reputation, featuring nine lead changes and seven ties. Brockport came out firing in the first half, but a resilient Geneseo squad kept pace, leading to a deadlocked 36-36 score at the intermission.

A defining characteristic of the game was Brockport's ball security, defensive activity, and efficiency at the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles took good care of the basketball, committing only 9 turnovers compared to Geneseo's 18. On the defensive end, Brockport's active hands led to an 11-5 advantage in steals, allowing them to generate 15 points off turnovers. Furthermore, Brockport capitalized on their opportunities at the line, shooting a solid 16-of-20 (80%) from the free-throw line to help maintain their edge.

The second half was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find consistent rhythm. Trailing 64-63 in the final moments, the Golden Eagles needed a defensive stop to keep their hopes alive.

With one second on the clock and Brockport trailing by one, Ajani Flemming came up with a massive steal on a Geneseo possession to give the Golden Eagles the ball back with only 4 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Jacob Oka drove hard into the paint and converted a layup with just one second left on the clock to seal the 65-64 victory.

Statistical Leaders

The Knights had no answer for Aybar, who was lethal from the jump and reached double digits by halftime with 13 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting performance. He finished the night with a game-high 23 points on efficient 8-of-14 shooting, went a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, and added five rebounds, a team-high four assists, and three steals.

Continuing his dominant interior presence, Oka recorded his second consecutive double-double. He hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds and scored 15 points, including the most important bucket of the night in the final second of play.

Providing a spark off the bench, Dyer contributed 11 points and five rebounds. He was a defensive menace throughout the night, leading all players with a game-high four steals.

Up Next: No. 5 Brockport will face No. 4 SUNY Poly at their gym on Saturday, February 21st, at 2 p.m. for the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament.
