VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Brockport Baseball team came up short in a pair of outings in Virginia Beach on Saturday, February 28th. The Golden Eagles fell to 0-5 to begin the season after Saturday's action.
Alfred State 7 - Brockport 6
The Golden Eagles would strike first, seeing
Josh Indek score on a passed ball to give Brockport a 1-0 lead entering the second inning. Following three scoreless innings from
Camden Schaffer, the Pioneers would jump ahead in the top of the fourth, plating five runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Brockport would respond in the bottom of the inning, with RBI hits from
Kyle Blake and
Steven Merkel highlighting a three-run inning. Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Green and Gold would jump back in front in the sixth.
Matthew Coon would leave the yard with a solo homer to tie the game, with
Josh Indek scoring on a passed ball to take a 6-5 lead.
Alfred State would get the final laugh, launching a two-run home run in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 edge. The Pioneers' bullpen would hold off Brockport, shutting out the Golden Eagles in the final three frames to earn the win.
Blake Fortunato was excellent at the plate for Brockport, going three-for-four with a double.
Josh Indek provided a strong effort in the lead-off spot, reaching base three times with two hits and two runs scored.
Nick Ianniello tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out two batters.
Virginia Wesleyan 11 - Brockport 5
Much like game one, Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. An
Evan Brock RBI groundout would score
James Dixon to put the Green and Gold on the board. The Marlins would tie the contest at 1-1 entering the second inning.
Four straight Brockport runs across the second and fifth innings would give the Golden Eagles a 5-1 edge entering the bottom of the fifth. A
James Dixon RBI single in the second would kick-start the scoring, followed by a
Michael Norton RBI double in the fourth, and an
Evan Brock solo homer putting Brockport up by four.
Virginia Wesleyan's pitching staff and offense would find a groove, shutting out the Golden Eagles and scoring the final 10 runs of the contest. A eight run fifth inning would sink the Golden Eagles, with Virginia Wesleyan tagging on two more runs in the eighth inning to earn an 11-5 win.
Cole Grazioplene provided a strong game two, going two-for-four with a double and a run scored.
Michael Norton was patient at the plate, drawing two walks and finishing one-for-two with a double.
Evan Brock's power was on full display, launching his third home run of the season and reaching base three times with two RBIs.
