Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downs Geneseo on We Back Pat Night, 72-64

BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport Women's Basketball team (14-6, 10-1 E8) won its eighth straight contest, downing SUNY Geneseo (14-7, 8-3 E8) on We Back Pat night on Tuesday, February 3rd. The victory marked the Golden Eagles' fourth straight regular-season win against the Knights in the head-to-head series.

Mandy Brink was the heartbeat of the Brockport offense, leading all scorers with 21 points, adding six rebounds, and five assists in an excellent showing for the Green and Gold.

Brianna Carey shone from beyond the arc, drilling a trio of three pointers (3-8), finishing with 17 points, two rebounds, and a steal in a strong effort.

Stephanie Jean-Baptiste was efficient for the Golden Eagles, scoring 14 points (6-13) with four rebounds and two assists.

Peyton Maneri rounded out the top scorers for Brockport, scoring 10 points as a dynamic playmaker. She led the squad with six assists, chipping in with three rebounds and a steal.

Despite only connecting for four made field goals in the opening 10 minutes (4-17), Brockport would take a four-point lead into the second quarter on the back of excellent defense. Ava Howie's three-point make toward the end of the quarter would help give Brockport a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles' offense would find its stride in the second quarter, scoring 22 points on excellent 9 of 17 shooting from the floor. Brockport's defense would work in harmony, holding Geneseo to 20% shooting from deep (1-5) to take a 22-15 edge in the quarter. Brianna Carey (6 pt), Peyton Maneri (7pt), and Stephanie Jean-Baptiste (5pt) would carry the Brockport offense in the period. The Golden Eagles would take a 11 point lead into halftime.

The Knights exited the halftime break upset-minded, making up serious ground in the third quarter. Despite mediocre shooting splits (7-22), the Geneseo defense would shut down Brockport, holding Brockport to just 14.2% shooting from downtown (1-7 3PT). A late Claire Turner jumper and two Brianna Carey free throws would keep Brockport ahead by seven entering the final frame.

Several lead changes would occur in the fourth quarter, seeing Geneseo take a 55-54 lead with 6:24 left in regulation. The Golden Eagles displayed their resilience, seeing buckets from Mandy Brink and Peyton Maneri put Brockport back up by four with 4:50 left. Up by just one with 2:38 left in the contest, Brianna Carey would carry Brockport to the finish line. Carey would score seven consecutive points, putting Brockport back up by eight points (68-10). The Golden Eagles would seal the contest at the free-throw line, picking up a marquee 72-64 Empire 8 win.

Claire Turner turned in an excellent performance, leading Brockport with 11 rebounds, five steals, and three blocks, adding four points in a gutsy winning effort.

Up Next: Brockport will head to Nazareth on Friday, February 6th, at 5:30 PM. A win would move Brockport into first place in the Empire 8 conference.
