Baseball Opens Empire 8 Play With DH Sweep of Keuka in Florida

Davenport, FL - The Brockport baseball team (4-13, 2-0 E8) swept Keuka College (3-7, 0-2 E8) in doubleheader action from Davenport, FL on Friday, March 20th. The Golden Eagles offense came alive to open conference play, scoring 27 runs in 14 innings of work

Game One (7 in): Brockport 16 - Keuka 2

Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Matt Mayer would get the offense started in game one. Mayer would score Evan Brock with a RBI single to even the contest at 1-1. Brockport would take over the contest in the fourth inning, plating 12 runs.

Matthew Coon would record two RBI hits (3 RBI) in the inning, with Kyle Blake, and Evan Brock adding RBI hits as well. Matt Mayer would have the highlight of the inning, launching a three-run home run to put Brockport up 12-1. Despite a Keuka run in the sixth, an Evan Brock sacrifice fly, and a Blake Fortunato two-RBI single, would give Brockport the one-sided victory.

Josh Indek led the Green and Gold with three hits, going three-for-four with a double and a run scored.

Matt Mayer had a near-perfect outing for Brockport, going two-for-two (2BB) with four RBIs, three runs scored, and a home run. 

Matthew Coon had himself a day at the plate, finishing two-for-four with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Camden Schaffer (W, 1-1) provided a strong start, going six innings with six strikeouts and just two runs allowed.

Game Two: Brockport 11 - Keuka 3

Building off a strong game one, Matt Mayer would open the scoring in game two. Mayer's sacrifice fly would score Nick Mahar and give Brockport a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Despite the Wolves tying the game in the fourth, the Golden Eagles' offense would catch fire in the bottom of the inning.

Matthew Coon would clear the bases with a three-run homer, scoring James Dixon and Evan Brock to put Brockport ahead 4-1. Brockport would answer another Keuka score, this time with Blake Fortunato clearing the wall for a solo home run, putting Brockport ahead by three (5-2).

The Golden Eagles would run away with the contest in the sixth, posting a four-run inning. A two-RBI single from Josh Indek would start the scoring, followed by a Cole Grazioplene RBI triple and Blake Fortunato RBI groundout to jump ahead 9-3. Cooper Hassell would round out Brockport's scoring in the doubleheader, lacing an RBI single.

James Dixon led the Golden Eagles with three hits in game two, scoring two runs with a double. 

Matthew Coon (HR, 2R) and Blake Fortunato (2H, R) each finished with a game-high three RBI's for the Green and Gold.

Tyler Pohlman (W, 1-2) earned the win on the mound for Brockport, finishing with five strikeouts and just two earned runs across 7.2 innings pitched.
