UTICA, N.Y. — The SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team (2-10, 2-3 Empire 8) dropped a conference road contest to Utica (4-7, 3-2 E8), 12-8, on Saturday afternoon at Gaetano Stadium. Despite a strong effort on ground balls and a mid-game surge, the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome an early deficit against the Pioneers.
How It Happened
Utica controlled the opening quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to take a 5-0 advantage. Michael Reid opened the scoring at the 12:51 mark, sparking a run that left Brockport searching for offensive rhythm early.
The Golden Eagles responded in the second quarter, beginning with an unassisted goal from Rorick Perry. Daniel Wright and Brenden McClay added unassisted tallies to cut the deficit to 5-3. However, late penalties proved costly, as Utica capitalized with two man-up goals in the final 40 seconds of the half to extend its lead to 7-3 heading into the break.
Brockport gained momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Utica 3-1. Marc Zappulla opened the period with a goal, while Wright added a man-up score and another unassisted tally to bring the Golden Eagles within one at 7-6 with 5:46 remaining. Utica's Ryan Hollenbeck responded late in the quarter to halt the rally and restore a two-goal cushion.
In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers pulled away with a decisive four-goal run. Brockport continued to compete, highlighted by Wright's fourth goal of the game and a late tally from Pierson Jacobs, assisted by McClay, but the early deficit proved insurmountable.
Brockport held advantages in ground balls (42-33) and posted an 88.2 percent clear rate (15-of-17), but could not complete the comeback.
