ALBANY, N.Y. — The SUNY Brockport baseball team (16-14, 12-1 E8) saw its 14-game winning streak come to an end Friday afternoon, falling 10-6 to RV Russell Sage (24-4, 13-0 E8) in an Empire 8 matchup. Despite an early offensive surge and a late comeback attempt, the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome the Gators' steady production.
Matt Mayer led the Brockport offense, going 2-for-4 with a triple, double, and two RBIs. The Golden Eagles' catcher has now recorded multiple hits in three consecutive games.
Brendan Pajak delivered a strong performance out of the bullpen, keeping Brockport within striking distance with 4.2 innings of one-run baseball while adding a strikeout.
Kyle Blake was effective at the plate for the Green and Gold, reaching base three times and finishing 2-for-3 with a walk.
Brockport opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, as Evan Brock delivered a two-RBI single to give the Golden Eagles an early 2-0 advantage. Russell Sage responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to even the score. Brockport quickly regained the lead in the second, when Matt Mayer drove in a run with a triple to make it 3-2. The Gators answered once again, plating two runs to take a 4-3 lead into the third inning.
Following a scoreless third, Russell Sage created separation with six combined runs across the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead to 10-3. Matthew Coon helped Brockport chip away at the deficit with a two-run home run, extending his hitting streak to 19 games. Mayer later added an RBI double to narrow the gap to 10-6, but the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the comeback.
Brockport totaled seven hits to Russell Sage's eight, but four defensive errors and eight walks issued proved costly in the battle for first place in the Empire 8 standings.
