Brockport, N.Y. — The Brockport baseball team (17-16, 13-3 E8) fell to St. John Fisher (24-6, 13-2 E8), 5-1, in an Empire 8 Conference matchup on Wednesday, April 22, at home. Despite a strong performance from the pitching staff that totaled 10 strikeouts, the Cardinals proved more effective on the mound to secure the victory.
Michael Norton led the Golden Eagles offensively from the designated hitter position, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a double while batting third in the lineup. Cole Grazioplene also recorded a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-4 as the starting center fielder.
Matthew Coon extended his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games, delivering a double down the third base line and scoring Brockport's lone run.
Ben Yerina turned in a strong relief outing, allowing just one run over four innings while striking out five.
Bryce Tyndell (L, 1-3) made the start for Brockport and struck out a game-high six batters over five innings. St. John Fisher struck first in the opening frame with a two-out, two-RBI double. After Tyndell held the Cardinals scoreless over the next two innings, St. John Fisher added to its lead in the fourth inning with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Tyndell closed his outing with a scoreless fifth inning before the Cardinals extended their lead to 5-0 on a solo home run by Jackson Frey in the sixth inning.
Brockport broke through in the seventh inning, and later placed a runner in scoring position in the final frame, but the St. John Fisher pitching staff held firm to secure the conference win.
James Dixon started at third base and recorded a hit from the sixth spot in the lineup, while also contributing a double play that brought in Brockport's only run.
