Pontari Earns 100th Career Win, Baseball Posts 49 Runs in DH Sweep of Alfred

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Brockport baseball team (19-16, 15-3 Empire 8) delivered a dominant doubleheader sweep over Alfred (2-33, 0-19 Empire 8) on Friday, April 24, at home. With a pair of decisive seven-inning victories, the Golden Eagles moved into second place in the conference standings and officially clinched a berth in the Empire 8 Tournament.

Game One: Brockport 25, Alfred 5 (7 innings)

With the game one victory, head coach Nick Pontari recorded his 100th career win. Brockport's 25-run performance marked the program's highest single-game run total since April 10, 2008 (at Medaille).

Five Golden Eagles recorded multi-hit performances, led by Evan Brock (three runs, two RBI) and James Dixon (double, stolen base), who each tallied three hits. Brock reached base safely five times, while both players also added a stolen base.

Matthew Coon powered the offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs scored, and a team-high five RBI. Michael Norton added a home run—his first of two on the day—while totaling three RBI and two runs scored. Blake Fortunato also contributed significantly, going 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Alfred opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, but Brockport responded with 16 consecutive runs to seize control. A three-run homer from Norton and a two-run double from Fortunato highlighted a six-run second inning, giving the Golden Eagles a 6-1 advantage.

Brockport followed with another six-run frame in the third, fueled by a three-RBI double from Coon and an RBI hit from Cole Grazioplene to extend the lead to 12-1. In the fourth, RBI singles from Brock and Fortunato set up a three-run home run by Coon, pushing the margin to 16-1.

After Alfred scored twice in the fifth, Brockport answered with a nine-run inning. RBI doubles from Brock, Liam Pytlak (three RBI), and Ryan Leniec, along with a two-run single from Brian Hoffman, helped extend the lead to 25-3. Alfred added two late runs, but Brockport secured the 25-5 victory.

The Golden Eagles generated 35 baserunners in the contest, totaling 18 hits, 12 walks, and five hit-by-pitches.

Game Two: Brockport 24, Alfred 0

Brockport continued its offensive surge in game two, posting a 24-0 shutout victory.

Quinn Mahoney delivered a career-best performance, going 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, three RBI, and two doubles. Steven Merkel added a strong showing, finishing 2-for-2 after being hit by a pitch, while hitting his first home run as a Golden Eagle and driving in three runs with two runs scored.
