SUNY Brockport welcomed Matt Szymanski back to the Golden Eagles football program in the winter of 2026, where he serves as the team’s Special Teams Coordinator.
Szymanski returns to Brockport after a highly successful stint at Randolph-Macon College, where he most recently served as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. During his time with the Yellow Jackets, Szymanski played a key role in building one of the nation’s top defensive units, helping guide the program to elite national rankings in multiple statistical categories. In 2025, Randolph-Macon ranked among the NCAA Division III leaders in turnovers gained (2nd – 31), interception return touchdowns (2nd – 5), defensive touchdowns (4th – 5), rushing defense (9th – 67.3 yards per game), and scoring defense (16th – 14.55 points per game), while producing nine All-Conference selections, three All-Region honorees, and one All-American .
Szymanski coached linebackers throughout his tenure at Randolph-Macon, mentoring multiple All-Conference and All-Region performers while also coordinating the kickoff and punt units. His responsibilities included defensive play-calling, opponent scouting, film breakdown, and weekly game plan implementation, along with directing special teams strategy on game day .
Prior to Randolph-Macon, Szymanski began his collegiate coaching career at Brockport as a Graduate Assistant and Linebackers Coach during the 2021-22 season. In that role, he contributed to defensive game planning, coordinated scout teams, and coached All-Conference linebackers, establishing a strong foundation within the Golden Eagles program .
In his current role at Brockport, Szymanski oversees all aspects of the Golden Eagles’ special teams units, including kickoff, punt, and field goal operations. Known for his detail-oriented approach and ability to develop impactful units, he brings a high level of organization, energy, and tactical awareness to a phase of the game that is critical to field position and game momentum.
A graduate of SUNY Brockport, Szymanski earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. He also has extensive recruiting experience across multiple regions, including New York, Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, further strengthening Brockport’s recruiting footprint.
Szymanski’s return to Brockport adds both familiarity and proven success to the Golden Eagles coaching staff, reinforcing the program’s commitment to excellence in all three phases of the game.
