SUNY Brockport athletics announced the promotion of
John Jackson '87, to the position of Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance in the Summer of 2025. A key member of the athletic training staff since 2005, Jackson steps into this new leadership role to help guide the department's efforts in supporting the overall health, wellness, and peak performance of Brockport's student-athletes.
In this newly created position, Jackson will lead a comprehensive sports performance unit that brings together athletic training, strength & conditioning, mental wellness support, and performance optimization. He will oversee the daily operations of the athletic training room, manage the department's medical clearance and injury protocols, and continue to work closely with student-athletes on return-to-play planning and recovery strategies. He will also continue primary athletic training coverage with the women's soccer and wrestling programs.
Jackson will be responsible for supervising the athletic training and strength & conditioning staff, maintaining regular coordination with team physicians and coaches, and help drive campus-wide mental health and wellness initiatives in collaboration with the Student Behavioral Consultation Team (SBCT).
Jackson has long been recognized as a trusted leader within the department, known for his compassion, professionalism, and tireless commitment to the student-athlete experience. Over the years, he has worked closely with several Brockport programs as the primary athletic training contact. His ability to build meaningful relationships with student-athletes, while also providing top-level health care and guidance, has made him a cornerstone of the Golden Eagle athletics community. He has also served as the staff advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), helping connect student-athletes with service opportunities and leadership development.
Prior to his time at Brockport, Jackson gained extensive experience as Director of the Athletic Training Outreach Program at Lattimore Physical Therapy, where he managed athletic training coverage for numerous interscholastic programs. He also worked as Head Athletic Trainer at Rush-Henrietta High School and as a clinical athletic trainer at Spencerport Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
He holds a master's degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Indiana State University, a bachelor's degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training from SUNY Brockport, and an associate degree in Physical Therapist Assisting from Genesee Community College.
In addition to his professional work, Jackson has been deeply involved in the Brockport community. He has coached youth soccer with the Brockport Blizzards and served as a member of the Brockport Planning Board. He leads the department's holiday fund efforts and has helped to raise over $20,000 in the last six years with all proceeds benefitting families in need at Barclay Elementary in Brockport. He has also volunteered to rescue over 300 dogs alongside the Puppy Mill Rescue Team, an organization that Jackson and his wife Lisa helped found. His wide-ranging involvement speaks to his strong connection to the Brockport area and his commitment to service beyond the field of play.
