BOXSCORE
Freshman
Kevin Dorn (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hallow Hills East) blasted home his second game-winning goal of the season with 39 seconds remaining in overtime to give The College at Brockport men's soccer team a 1-0 win over host Cortland on Friday afternoon.
Dorn beat a defender and struck a shot inside the right post from five yards away off a flick header by sophomore
Chris O'Gorman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) to win the game for Brockport (8-3-1, 5-1-0 SUNYAC). With the loss, Cortland dropped to 2-7-5 overall and 1-4-2 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.
The win was the 161st career victory for head coach
Gary LaPietra, tying him with former coach A. Huntley Parker Jr. for the most wins in school history. Brockport's home soccer field is named after Parker, who coached the men's soccer team to 23 winning seasons in his 25 years as coach.
“I'm just so happy we won tonight's game,” LaPietra said. “It's been a pleasure doing what I love for 16 years, and I've always been surrounded with good players and coaches.”
On Friday, the Golden Eagles created more opportunities than the Red Dragons in the first half. Brockport out-shot Cortland 9-5, and earned six corners compared to only one for the Red Dragons in the opening stanza.
However, neither team was able to capitalize, and the teams entered halftime knotted in a scoreless tie.
Play was more even in the second half, but Golden Eagle goalie
Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) only had to make one of his four stops in the second half. Cortland goalkeeper Tim Beauvais five saves in the contest, two of which came in the second half to force overtime.
Only three total shots were taken in overtime entering the final minute until O'Gorman got his head on a throw-in by sophomore
Bobby Ross (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). The flick found Dorn, who beat a defender and delivered the game-winner for Brockport, his second of the season.
Sauln earned the win in net with his sixth shutout of the year.
“It was a tough game based on the weather conditions,” LaPietra said. “Just the fact that we hung in there tells you a lot about the guys. Kyle [Sauln] had a tremendous showing in goal.”
Brockport continues its road trip on Saturday when they travel to Oswego to play the Lakers at 1pm on Saturday.
