BOXSCORE
The College at Brockport men's soccer team battled windy conditions and collected a 2-0 victory over host Oswego in Saturday's State University of New York Athletic Conference game. Freshman
Paul Altobelli(Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) and sophomore
Chris O'Gorman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) scored for Brockport (9-3-1, 6-1-0 SUNYAC).
The Golden Eagles earned their fourth straight win, all of which have been conference triumphs. Oswego (5-9-1, 0-7-1 SUNYAC) failed to grab its first SUNYAC victory of the season. The Golden Eagles currently sit second in the conference with 18 points.
The win is the 162nd in head coach
Gary LaPietra's illustrious career, who passed A. Huntley Parker Jr. for the most career wins by a men's soccer coach in Brockport history.
“Breaking the record means a lot,” LaPietra said. “Good things happen when you're surrounded by talented coaches and players.”
With the wind at their back, the Golden Eagles out-shot the Lakers 9-0 in the first half, and attempted three corner kicks in the stanza while Oswego had none.
Altobelli opened the scoring with a shot that went off the hands of Oswego goalie P.J. Goodwin and into the goal with some help from the wind. Altobelli is tied for the team lead with four goals.
The Golden Eagles carried their 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Lakers had the wind at their back. They outshot the Golden Eagles 5-2 in the second period, but were unable to beat Brockport goalie
Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), who registered his second shutout of the weekend.
Sophomore
Bobby Ross (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) extended his point streak to four straight games when he registered an assist on a goal scored by O'Gorman in the 71st minute. The goal was O'Gorman's second this year.
“For the second time this weekend, it took a team effort for us to triumph with the weather conditions at hand,” LaPietra said. “When our team plays together, that's when we produce great results.”
Sauln turned in his seventh shutout with three saves. Goodwin also recorded three saves, but in a losing effort.
Brockport wraps up the regular season at home with games against Potsdam and Plattsburgh on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
