BOXSCORE
The College at Brockport field hockey team scored first and last against Ithaca College on Tuesday, winning 2-1 over the Bombers at Brockport Field. Sophomore
Madison Buckley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and senior
Kelly-Ann Henry (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) both tallied a goal and an assist in the Golden Eagles victory.
Brockport (6-4) dominated play in the first half, as they out-shot Ithaca (2-7) 11-1. Sophomore
Jessica Blind (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tallied five shots of her own in the half. The Golden Eagles also attempted 11 corners, compared to just two for the Bombers.
The best scoring chance in the first half came when Henry took the ball from half field all the way to the circle. Her shot was denied by Ithaca goalie Kelly Singleton, who registered eight saves in the first half alone.
Early in the second half the Bombers had a great look at the net off a rebound, but sophomore
Gina Stephan (Clarence, NY/Clarence) came up with a huge defensive save on a shot by Ithaca's Sam English to keep the scoreless tie.
At 41:48 into the game, Henry made yet another run up the right side and found Buckley in the middle for a Brockport goal. The goal is Buckley's team-leading eighth of the season. Henry was credited with her third assist.
With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Ithaca got on the board when English found Lindsay Flanagan in front of the net on a set play off a corner. English got the ball past Brockport goalie
Kasey Schreiner (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) to knot the game up at one.
Just over three minutes later, Buckley returned the favor. She sent a pass across the goal that Henry put away for the 2-1 lead late in the game. The Golden Eagles were able to withstand a few more chances by the Bombers and earn the victory.
Brockport head coach
Andrea Zurlo earned her 100th win as a collegiate field hockey coach, and her 82nd as the coach of the Golden Eagles.
“Madison [Buckley] and Kelly-Ann [Henry] were very good today,” Zurlo said. “Their passes were precise and they came up huge for us in big moments.”
Schreiner earned the win in net for the Golden Eagles with four saves. Singleton recorded 12 saves in a losing effort for the Bombers.
Brockport returns to action Wednesday, as they host St. John Fisher College at 4 pm.
