The College at Brockport women's tennis team swept the doubles portion of Monday night's match against Fredonia en route to a 6-1 victory over the Blue Devils at Salmon Creek Country Club.
Rain forced the match to be pushed back and moved inside, but the Golden Eagles (4-5, 2-1 SUNYAC) were up to the challenge. At first doubles,
Mackenzie Rounds (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and
Kaitlyn Broderick (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) won their first match together 8-4.
At No. 2 doubles,
Katelyn Richenberg (Stafford, NY/Batavia) and
Jen Lazarony (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) also won their first match as a duo, with a score of 8-2. At the No. 3 flight,
Ellen Meyers (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and
Lauren Bohman (Sayville, NY/Sayville) completed the sweep with an 8-1 win, giving Brockport a commanding 3-0 lead going into singles action.
Lazarony was decisive in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at second singles and Broderick sealed the win with a hard-fought, three-set win at No. 3 singles. After losing the first set 6-3, Broderick stormed back and only dropped five games in the final two sets.
Richenberg picked up the final win for the Golden Eagles at fourth singles, winning a shortened match 8-4. Fifth and sixth singles matches weren't played because the match was decided.
“Three new doubles teams took the court today and they all came out with wins,” head coach
Ben Klempka said. “The confidence a player carries into a singles match after sweeping doubles is incredibly high.”
The Golden Eagles travel to Elmira College on Wednesday for a 4 pm match, which is their last dual match before SUNYAC Championships.
