Golden Eagles Fall Short in Championship Game

Men's Soccer now awaits an NCAA Tournament at-large bid

Kyle Sauln helped the Brockport defense in a tough 1-0 loss to Oneonta
BOXSCORE

Senior Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made seven saves on Saturday, but the one goal he allowed was enough for Oneonta to defeat The College at Brockport in the 2011 SUNYAC Men's Soccer Championship 1-0. Sauln, along with Brian Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) have been a part of four consecutive runs to the SUNYAC Championship game, winning the title in 2009.

For his efforts, Sauln was named to the All-Tournament Team. In two tournament games, Sauln allowed just one goal and made nine saves. Joining Sauln on the All-Tournament Team was Aubrey Brown (Marathon, NY/Marathon) and Max Egan (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia). Brown helped anchor the defense in both games while Egan controlled the midfield.

The Golden Eagles only tested Oneonta keeper Max Siegelman with one shot in the first half. The Red Dragons fired often on Sauln, as Oneonta finished the first half with seven shots. Sauln, who ranks atop multiple SUNYAC goalie statistical categories, including goals against average and save percentage, posted a shutout in the first half as both teams went into the intermission scoreless. Siegelman finished the match without having to make a save. Siegelman is second in the conference in goals against average.

Oneonta came out firing in the second half, testing Sauln with multiple shots. The Red Dragons found a way to get past Sauln. Alex Shkreli, who had just come onto the pitch as a substitute in the 59th minute, crossed the ball to Justin Rivera in the 62nd minute who then one-touched the pass and buried the shot. It was Rivera's fourth goal of the season.
Oneonta held possession in both shots and corner kicks in the second half, this time testing Sauln 10 times. Bobby Ross (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) took a shot with just under two minutes to play, but his attempt sailed high, proving to be the last effort for the Golden Eagles.

The Red Dragons captured their first SUNYAC Championship since rejoining the Division III ranks in 2007. The Golden Eagles fell short in the 2010 SUNYAC Championship game, dropping the match in penalty shots to Plattsburgh.

Brockport's season still has some life left in it. The Golden Eagles will be expecting a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Announcements for bids will be made Monday at 1pm.
