BOXSCORE
The College at Brockport's women's lacrosse team held Ithaca College to just three first-half goals, but the Golden Eagles dropped a 10-6 decision to the Bombers Monday night in the season-opener for both teams down in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Sophomore Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and junior Lindsay John (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) each scored two goals while sophomores Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) and Stephanie Toomey (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) each added goals for the Golden Eagles (0-1).
Ithaca (1-0) scored first in the ninth minute, and the defenses made the 1-0 score hold up until Brown notched an even-strength goal with 3:27 left in the first half. The Bombers, who shared the 2010 regular-season title with Stevens Institute of Technology, answered back with two goals during the final 1:15 of the half to take a 3-1 halftime lead.
Brockport, which last season made the school's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament, trailed 4-1 before Brown recorded her second goal off a free position shot with 24:32 remaining.
The teams traded goals over the next 18 minutes, with John scoring two free position goals and Maguire and Toomey each adding free position goals for the Green and Gold. Toomey's tally pulled Brockport within 7-5 with 10:47 remaining, and John's goal kept the Golden Eagles down two, 8-6 with 6:47 left to play.
Ithaca's defense held the Golden Eagles' attack in check, and the Bombers tacked on two goals in a 64-second span to finish off the scoring.
Senior Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville), a first-team All-SUNYAC and second-team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) selection during 2010, made 12 saves for Brockport, which outshot Ithaca 27-22.
The Golden Eagles return to action with an 11 a.m. contest Wednesday morning against Connecticut College.
