The College at Brockport's softball team saw its season-opening eight-game win streak snapped Thursday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles fell to Edgewood (Wisc.) College 6-4 at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla.
Brockport (9-1) bounced back and salvaged a split Thursday, defeating Wooster (OH) College 7-1 in game two.
Dating back to the 1984 season, Brockport matched the 1993 and 1988 teams with eight consecutive wins to start the season before falling to Edgewood.
Juniors
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) each had two hits in game one for the Golden Eagles (8-1), who trailed 6-3 entering the seventh inning before scoring a run to close within 6-4. Brockport put runners on first and second with two outs, but couldn't drive home the tying runs.
In game two, senior
Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) delivered another strong outing, picking up her fifth win of the year while allowing only one run.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of the first game. Hochman hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on junior
Amy Nowak's (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) RBI double to right-center field.
Edgewood (3-6) answered with four runs in the fourth, scoring on an RBI double, a wild pitch and a two-run triple, to take a 4-1 lead.
Brockport pulled within 4-3 in the fifth. Sophomore
Emily Wagner (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) walked, Stahl hit a one-out single and sophomore
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) drove home Wagner with a fielder's choice. Stahl took third on a wild pitch and scored when freshman
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) singled through the left side of the infield.
Edgewood got the two runs back in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead before Brockport mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) walked, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and crossed the plate with Brockport's fourth run after a third wild pitch.
Hochman walked and freshman
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) singled, giving Brockport runners at first and second with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the game.
Brockport concludes its Spring Training trip Friday with a pair of games: a 9 a.m. contest against Delaware Valley, and an 11 a.m. game against Worcester State.
