Senior Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) capped a successful week with a 13-strikeout performance leading The College at Brockport Softball team to a 3-0 victory over Worcester (MA) State to complete the 12-game Spring Training trip to Florida for the Golden Eagles Friday in Fort Myers.
Earlier in the morning, the Golden Eagles (10-2) dropped a 10-2 decision to Delaware Valley College. Brockport finished the Florida training trip with a 10-2 record including eight straight wins to start the season. Geer was masterful in the week with 52 strikeouts and registering six victories.
Against Worcester, Geer fanned seven of the first nine batters she faced and Brockport scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a lead. In the first, Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek). Junior Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) followed with a double scoring Yates and Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) chased her home with a double to put runners on second and third. Danielle Sage (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) singled with the next at bat scoring Stahl for the 2-0 Brockport lead.
With Geer controlling the Worcester bats, Brockport added another run in the fourth as Sage led off the inning with a home run to cap the scoring for the game.
“The home run by (Danielle) Sage was a clutch hit for us,” said head coach John Dumaw. “(Stephanie) Geer was pitching another great game and we just needed a few runs. The top of the order supplied the early run support and Geer took it from there.”
Worcester threatened in the fifth with one batter reaching base on an infield error and a later single put runners on the corners with two outs but Geer induced an infield fly to end the inning and then struck out the side in the sixth and retired two more batters on strikes in the seventh inning to cap the win.
In the first game of the day, Brockport fell behind early allowing six runs to score in the first two innings.
“I was disappointed in the effort in game one,” said Dumaw. “We came out flat and gave up a few runs. We dug ourselves into a hole and couldn't get out.”
Brockport scored both its runs in the third to cut the lead to 6-2 but Delaware Valley added three runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to complete the win.
In the third, Caitlyn Rena (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) singled to start the inning and two batters later, Claflin doubled to move Rena to third before Yates grounded out to the right side of the infield allowing Rena to score from third. Claflin scored when
Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) reached base due to an infield error by the shortstop.
