Sophomore
Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored a season-high four goals with two assists, and The College at Brockport's women's lacrosse team had nine different goal-scorers during a 15-6 win over the University of Rochester Tuesday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
"They were very patient today, and whenever Rochester made a save, they were riding back very hard. Most of the time we would steal it back before the ball even crossed midfield," said Linda Michele, Brockport's second-year head coach.
"Riding back like that led to us getting goals in transition, and the hard pressure coming off the offensive end was key for us scoring today."
After a scoreless first five minutes and 45 seconds, sophomore
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) and Brown scored 33 seconds apart to put Brockport (1-2) up 2-0.
Rochester (1-3) scored to make it 3-1 with 21:55 left in the half before Brockport answered with five consecutive goals to close out the half up 8-1.
Freshman
Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) scored on a shot into the upper portion of the cage 2:04 into the second half, and Toomey added a goal 48 seconds later to push the Brockport edge to 10-1.
The Yellowjackets and Golden Eagles traded goals over the ensuing minutes until Brockport answered with a 3-0 run to take a 14-3 lead, which initiated the running clock.
Rochester scored the next three goals to close within 14-6 before Maguire closed out the scoring with 27 seconds remaining. Maguire, Scordo and sophomore
Stephanie Toomey (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) each scored twice for the Golden Eagles.
Senior
Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville) made seven saves for the win. Brockport enjoyed a 31-16 edge in shots and a 24-17 edge in ground balls against Rochester.
"This win was huge. The team played well in Florida, well enough to win, but unfortunately the scoreboard didn't read that way," Michele said. "We have to play our game and make the scoreboard read in our favor. I'm glad they were able to get themselves over the hump. We are capable, and now that we have that first win, it should help us get more."
Brockport returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, when the Golden Eagles host St. Lawrence University in Brockport's 2011 home opener.
