Sophomore Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) connected on a three-run home run to right field to cap a four-run seventh inning as The College at Brockport Softball team won a 5-2 decision in the opening game of a non-league doubleheader Sunday afternoon over the University of Rochester in Rochester.
The Yellowjackets (15-9) recovered to post a 5-3 victory in game two of the twinbill.
In the opener, Caitlyn Rena (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before sophomore Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/Wets Seneca East) singled down the right field line to score Rena for the first run of the game in the third inning for Brockport (13-7).
Senior Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) had a perfect game through four innings but Rochester scored in the fifth inning with a lead-off home run before Geer struck out three of the next four batters to end the inning. She finished with nine strikeouts.
In the seventh, Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) started the Brockport rally with a one-out double. Meghan Power (Hagaman, NY/Amsterdam) singled advancing pinch-runner Shannon Westfall (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) to third. A ground out advanced Power to second and Yates followed with a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Westfall and give Brockport a 2-1 lead.
With runners on the corners, Claflin homered to right field for three more runs pushing the lead to 5-1.
In game two, Rochester took an early lead with a single run in the first inning but Brockport took a 3-1 lead with a wild second inning.
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit), Power and Emily Wagner (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) each singled to start the inning with Martin scoring on Wagner's single. Dorothy Niemira (Garden City, NY/Garden City) reached base on a throwing error but no runners scored as the ball struck a Brockport coach on the throw home causing the ball to be ruled dead leaving the bases loaded. Brittany Hertle (Kingston, NY/Kingston) reached on another Rochester error allowing one run to score and after two infield grounders resulted in runners forced out at the plate, Claflin drew a bases loaded walk for the third run of the inning and a 3-1 Brockport lead.
Rochester tied the score with single runs in both the second and third innings and took a 4-3 lead with another single run in the fourth with two of the three runs scored after two outs had been recorded in the second and fourth innings.
The Yellowjackets scored a fifth run in the sixth inning with Brockport committing two errors in the frame.
Claflin finished the day with three hits and five runs batted in, Power had three hits and two runs scored and Yates chipped in two hits with two RBI.
