BOXSCORE GAME 1 BOXSCORE GAME 2
Sophomore Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) went 3-for-4 with one run batted in and two runs scored to complete a two game sweep for The College at Brockport Softball team against Oswego Friday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at the Clark V. Whited Complex.
The Golden Eagles (17-7 Overall/3-3 SUNYAC) took game one 5-1 and game two 9-1.
“I think we are where we want to be,” said Brockport head coach John Dumaw. “I think we're starting to hit the ball. The freshmen are starting to come into their own now. “
Junior Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) shut down the Lakers (5-16/1-9) in game one, pitching a complete game four hitter, striking out a season-high eight batters.
“Everything fell in place for us today,” said Farrell. “It was a big win. I started with a lot of inside pitches but then mixed it up with some rise balls, mixed in some changeups but mixed the pitches just to keep the hitters off balance.”
Yates started the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the fourth inning, scoring on a wild pitch after being walked to start the inning. Later in the fourth with two runners on, freshman Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) singled to left center scoring two runners and increasing the Golden Eagle lead to 3-0. Johnson finished game one going 2-of-3 with the two RBI.
In the fifth inning, Brockport added to its lead with a pair of runs. Yates collected an RBI with a single knocking in Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) and earlier in the inning, junior Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) scored on a wild pitch.
Game two was controlled by the Brockport offense. The Golden Eagles pounded out 10 hits in less than five complete innings as the game ended early due to the eight-run rule.
In the fourth, freshman Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) advanced to third after walking to lead off the inning, stealing second and advancing another base on an error. She scored after sophomore Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) doubled to left.
Claflin connected on her third home run in six games and Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) hit her second homer of the season sparking the Brockport offense.
“I just knew I needed to jump on the first pitch,” Claflin said of her home run. “The pitcher kept throwing first-pitch strikes, and she gave me a good inside pitch and I just went with it.”
In the fifth, Brockport loaded the bases with two outs and Yates ended the game with a drive to right field scoring one run and providing the eight-run advantage.
Senior Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) improved her record to 11-1 with the win in game two, pitching three innings and striking out three. The senior was delayed arriving to the doubleheader after attending the College's Honors and Awards ceremony as the Chemistry major was on hand to receive recognition as one of the four SUNY Chancellor's Award of Excellence awards for the college. She was also the winner of the undergraduate award winner for the school of science and mathematics.
