Brockport holds RIT scoreless for 35 minutes en route to 15-4 win

Amanda Massmann and Brockport limited RIT to four goals Friday afternoon.
BOXSCORE

Eight different members of The College at Brockport's women's lacrosse team scored goals as the Golden Eagles defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 15-4 on a chilly Friday afternoon at Brockport Field.

Sophomores Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Stephanie Toomey (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) and freshman Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) each scored three goals for the Golden Eagles (6-3 overall). Defensively, Brockport held RIT to one first-half goal, and the four goals allowed were a season-low for the Golden Eagles.

Senior Amanda Massmann (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) and the rest of Brockport's midfielders and defenders stepped up and neutralized RIT's leading scorer, Shelby Vakiener, who entered the game with 43 goals and 22 assists. Vakiener finished with only two assists.

“We have an unstoppable unit on defense,” Massmann said. “Everyone's really comfortable with each other, we work hard, we communicate and we're pretty much unstoppable when we all play like that. We're very confident in every single person back there. We have a great goalie, too. We gave them a lot of pressure and really got in their faces as much as possible. We pressured them hard and it worked well.”

One game removed from rallying to defeat State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rivals Geneseo, the Green and Gold carried that momentum into Friday's non-conference clash.

Scordo scored twice and Toomey, Brown and junior Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) all scored during the first 16 minutes as Brockport built a 5-0 lead. After RIT (5-8) broke through with 12:30 remaining in the first half, the Green and Gold responded by scoring the next nine goals to take a 14-1 lead. Brown scored two goals while Piraino added a goal and two assists during the run.

Piraino finished with two goals and three assists for a team-high five points while juniors Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), Lindsay John (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) and Carly Motondo (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and freshman Allyson Wolf (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) each added a goal for Brockport. It was Wolf's first goal of her collegiate career, and it came during a man-down situation to put Brockport up 8-1 with 1:29 left before halftime.

Brockport outshot RIT 19-5 in the first half, and 37-16 for the game. The Golden Eagles also enjoyed a 21-11 edge in ground balls, and a 14-7 edge in draw controls.

Brown upped her team-leading goal total to 24 while Toomey raised her total to 16 and Scordo upped her total to 14. Scordo's three goals were a career-high.

Brockport's defense held RIT scoreless over the first 17:30, and following the Tigers' first goal, Brockport strung together a 35 minute, 30-second scoreless streak bridging both halves.

Starting defenders Melissa Rosintoski (Black River, NY/Carthage), Danielle Messimer (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and Bridget Mulvena (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) kept things clean in front of senior Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville), who made six saves for the win.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a 1 p.m. home game against Oswego Saturday afternoon.
