BOXSCORE
Make it five in a row for the red-hot College at Brockport women's lacrosse team.
Sophomore Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) netted the eventual winner with 1:42 remaining in the second three-minute overtime session as the Golden Eagles rallied from an overtime deficit to win 14-13 over Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Tuesday afternoon at Rangers Stadium on the Spencerport High School campus.
Junior Carly Motondo (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) tied her career-high by scoring five goals, including three during a span of 13 minute, 22-seconds as the Golden Eagles (8-3 overall, 5-1 SUNYAC) took an 11-8 lead late in the second half.
The Blue Devils (10-4, 3-3) responded by scoring the final three goals of regulation, over a 6:14 span, to knot the score at 11-all. Fredonia actually took a 12-11 lead just 52 seconds into the first overtime period, but junior Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) tied the score off an assist from Brown with 55 seconds left. Brown made a quick pass to Bianchi, who buried the shot.
Fresh off being named to the Synapse Sports (formerly known as womenslacrosse.com) Weekly Division III Honor Roll, junior attack Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) scored the last of her three goals 18 seconds later to stake the Green and Gold to a 13-12 lead. Piraino finished with three goals and two assists (five points), giving her 10 goals and 12 assists during Brockport's five-game winning streak.
During the second overtime, Fredonia once again pulled even on a free-position goal 32 seconds into the second extra session, but Piraino found Brown for the go-ahead goal with 1:42 remaining. Brown used an opening to send a shot into the lower-left portion of the net for the eventual game-winner.
The Golden Eagles' defense clamped down and never allowed Fredonia to get off a good look on goal down the stretch.
“I think we all just blended really well on offense,” said Motondo, who previously scored five goals during a 23-6 win over Morrisville State on April 9, 2009 during her freshman year.
“The passing clicked today, I was just the person that the ball went to, and I found the net.”
Brown finished with two goals and two assists to raise her team-leading totals to 28 goals and 20 assists, and she also grabbed a career-high six ground balls. Motondo added two free-position goals for Brockport, which is mentioned in the receiving votes portion of the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll.
Motondo and Piraino each scored twice while sophomore Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) and freshman Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) each added first-half goals.
Piraino's goal with 16:23 left in the half put Brockport up 4-2 before Fredonia responded with three quick goals to take its first lead of the day, 5-4 with 8:43 left in the half.
Piraino knotted it with an unassisted goal and fed Motondo for the go-ahead goal with 4:05 remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead. The score was tied at six entering halftime.
Bianchi and Motondo each scored 1:13 apart early in the second half as Brockport jumped to an 8-6 lead before Fredonia tied it with two goals in a span of 29 seconds.
Brockport outshot Fredonia 37-19 for the game, including a 17-6 shot differential in the second half. Senior Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville) made five saves for the win.
The Golden Eagles hit the road for a 2 p.m. non-conference game at Union College on Saturday, followed by a 4 p.m. game at Buffalo State on April 26. Brockport returns home to face Oneonta at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30 on Senior Day for the Golden Eagles.
