Emily Dumas' two-out, two-run single lifted Brockport past Potsdam 2-1 in Game 1.
GAME ONE BOXSCORE             GAME TWO BOXSCORE

When The College at Brockport's softball team surrendered a two-out, solo home run in the top of the ninth inning of Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against Potsdam, the Golden Eagles didn't panic when down 1-0 heading into their last at-bats.

Instead, Brockport's bats came to life, sparking a come-from-behind win and a doubleheader sweep of the Bears at Brockport's Clark V. Whited Complex.

Freshman Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) delivered a clutch, two-out, two-run single into left field that plated sophomore Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) and junior Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) as the Golden Eagles rallied for a thrilling, 2-1 win over Potsdam.

Junior Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) crushed a two-run home run and Stahl added a two-run single as Brockport defeated Potsdam 6-4 in Game 2 of the doubleheader between State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) squads.

During Saturday's doubleheader, the Golden Eagles (19-9 overall, 5-5 SUNYAC) held their K's for CURE fundraiser to raise money to fight childhood cancer. Brockport fans dropped off their bottles and cans in a collection box outside the complex, and after the doubleheader, members of the team canvassed the Brockport community, collecting cans that are left out by neighbors.

Emily Herman, Stahl's cousin, survived a bout with leukemia when she was 10 years old. Herman, a resident of Kendall, Orleans County, threw out the first pitch.

Brockport's coaching staff each donated $1 for every strikeout by a Golden Eagle pitcher. Senior Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) pitched the 67th complete game of her illustrious Brockport career, striking out 10 while allowing only one run on five hits in nine innings in Game 1. Freshman Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) picked up the Game 2 win, holding Potsdam to four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in the complete-game win. Fleming improved her record to 3-2.

In running her record to 12-2, Geer pitched through some jams against the Bears. With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, Potsdam (9-20, 0-13) used a walk and a pair of bunts to put runners at second and third with just one out. But Geer, a three-time All-SUNYAC selection, bore down and got a swinging strikeout and a pop up to end the threat.

The Bears threatened to score first in the eighth, getting the potential go-ahead run to third base with two outs, but once again, Geer escaped the jam, inducing a fly out to center field to end the inning.

Potsdam junior Heidi Grebinger belted a two-out, solo home run in the top of the ninth to temporarily stake the Bears to a 1-0 lead before Brockport rallied in the bottom of the inning.

Stahl led off with a single up the middle, and Claflin reached on a fielder's choice. Stahl took second base on a throwing error on the play, and both runners moved up one base on sophomore Jenna Yates' (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) fielder's choice. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Potsdam's Ashley Thayer got a foul out and a pop out, bringing Dumas to the plate with the game on the line.

The freshman infielder came through with a two-run single, her first RBI since March 17, as Brockport celebrated Dumas' game-ending heroics.

Potsdam jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2, scoring on a two-run, first-inning home run from Amanda Perry, her seventh home run of 2011.

Brockport answered in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Emily Wagner (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) reached on a single before Nowak hit the first home run of her Brockport career.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead in the second. Freshman Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) led off with a single into left field, and junior Meghan Power (Hagaman, NY/Amsterdam) followed with a single up the middle. Martin and Power each stole a base to give Brockport runners at second and third with no outs, and after a ground out, Stahl made it 4-1 Brockport with a two-run single down the left field line.

Dumas added an RBI double in the third as Brockport took a 5-3 lead. Potsdam pulled within 5-4 in the fourth, but Brockport pushed across an unearned run in the fifth for a 6-4 edge, and Fleming made the lead stand. She held Potsdam scoreless over the last three innings and, with the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh, Fleming got a swinging strikeout to end the game.

Brockport travels to Buffalo State for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday afternoon before hosting Cortland at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
