BOXSCORE GAME 1

Junior Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and sophomore Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) had two hits each for The College at Brockport Softball team but a ninth inning unearned run for Cortland allowed the Red Dragons, ranked #10 in the latest national poll, escape with a 1-0 victory in game one of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Wednesday afternoon at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport. The second game of the twin bill was suspended after four and a half innings with the game tied 2-2.

Cortland (28-3 Overall, 13-0 SUNYAC) scored in the ninth inning when Lorraine Stoddard hit a one-out single to right field and Cassie Kardias followed with a ground ball through the right side of the infield which was ruled a fielding error. After Katie Fusco struck out, Brooke Weidman (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) singled to left field scoring Stoddard for the only run of the game.

Brockport (19-10, 5-6) had its best chance to score in the first inning as Stahl and Claflin opened the bottom half of the inning with singles. With two outs, freshman Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) walked to load the bases before a fly out to center field ended the inning.

Cortland threatened in the seventh inning putting two runners on base but a force out at third kept the Red Dragons off the scoreboard and the game moved into extra innings.

In the eighth inning both Stahl and Claflin singled with two outs but were stranded after an infield ground out ended the inning.

Starter Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) allowed the unearned run and scattered seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

In game two, Cortland scored twice in the top of the first inning with a two-run double after a hit and another Red Dragon reaching base after being hit by pitch. Brockport answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to tie the score.

Stalh opened the inning with a walk and Claflin replaced her at first with a fielder's choice play. Dumas followed with a single up the middle and both Dumas and Claflin moved up one base on a passed ball. Sophomore Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) singled through the right side of the infield scoring Claflin and advancing Dumas to third. After Yates was thrown out on a steal attempt, junior Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) singled to score Dumas tying the game at 2-2.

In the second inning, Brockport nearly took the lead leaving two runners stranded on base. Junior Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) singled to start the inning and pinch hitter Meghan Power (Hagaman, NY/Amsterdam) walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. A Caitlyn Rena (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position but two consecutive fly outs ended the inning.

In the fifth inning Cortland's Abby Martin was thrown out at the plate after earning a one-out walk and moving to second on one wild pitch and then making her way to third on a second wild pitch but was tagged out by Brockport pitcher Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) as she tried to score from third.

In the bottom of the fifth, Stahl singled with a hard hit between the first and second basemen and moved to second on a wild pitch but was thrown out at third when she tried to take an extra base on the play. At that point the umpires suspended play due to heavy rain and later halted the game for it to be completed at a later date.
