Sophomore Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) finished the day with six hits to lead The College at Brockport Softball team to a doubleheader split with Oneonta and then travel to Oswego to complete a rain-halted game against Cortland that eventually ended in a 2-2 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tie due to darkness.
In the first game of the day, Brockport (21-12-1 Overall, 7-8-1 SUNYAC) scored five times in the third inning to break open a close game and cruised to an 8-1 win over Oneonta. In the second game of the doubleheader, Oneonta (17-18, 8-8) pitching limited Brockport to just a single hits in an 11-2 win and then the Golden Eagles boarded their bus heading to Oswego, NY to attempt to complete a rain-halted game against Cortland that was started Sunday afternoon. The teams arrived later than expected and played the final four innings of the contest but the score remained tied at 2-2 and the game was called as a tie due to darkness after seven complete innings.
In the first game against Oneonta, Brockport scored five times in the third inning as
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) walked to start the inning and
Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) reached base on a fielding error. A pair of passed balls allowed Claflin to move to third and Stahl to score giving Brockport a 2-0 lead.
Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) followed with a single up the middle plating Claflin. A ground out allowed Nowak to move to second and she moved to third on a Yates single. Sophomore
Danielle Sage (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) followed with a three-run home run to add to Brockport's lead.
Each team added single runs in the later innings for the final 8-1 score.
In game two, the Brockport bats were silenced with just one hit coming from the Brockport lineup. The Golden Eagles scored in the first inning with a walk, error and a groundout and added another run in the fourth inning with another error, a hit by pitch, a groundout and a sacrifice fly. The lone Brockport hit came in the fifth inning when Nowak connected on a two-out single and moved all the way to third on two passed balls before the inning ended. Oneonta scored six times in the second inning and added to its lead in the fourth with four more runs for the 11-1 lead.
Against Cortland, Yates finished with three hits and
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added a pair of hits and each team threatened to score but each time, the defense held strong and runners were left stranded on base. For the seven innings, Cortland left 10 runners on base and Brockport left nine runners stranded.
